Was wondering if anybody can help me.

How can i remove the strut on a mk3 golf? the top nut spins around when i try to undo it and ive seen strut tools which help but i need to do this by friday and i dont want to wait for delivery on a tool which would probably take about 4days to arrive.

Just wanted to know what other people out there did without using the tool...

i take it youre talking about the front dampers right?

if so, youll notice that the top of the shaft accepted an allen key (7mm usually)

you then need either a swan neck spanner or a spark plug socket to undo the nut whilst the rod is held still

Impact wrench - 23 from Machine Mart. You can buzz them off one-handed while, say, playing on your Gameboy with the other hand.

    Or as Matt said...

Get a 7mm allen key in the hole to keep the strut still and something, like an adjustable spanner, to keep the nut from spinning.

And whatever you do, don't get ****ed off...

    Unless you like angle grinders.

    ****ing Hell what happened there!

Cheers for the replies. I'll have a go with it now.

Oh and do you think its worth while getting spring compressors??

I rounded off the hole then lost the allen key in the engine bay (still haven't found it).

So I began hitting it with a hammer. :) I tell a lie... I didn't angle grind it in the end. I had to chisel away at the "threads" with a hammer and flathead screwdriver and then, eventually, the impact wrench shattered the excess metal so the nut could be removed. Lots of fun.

And yes, you definitely need spring compressors! 15 ish from Halfrauds.
