The 9A that's been in my mk2 for the last nearly 4 years has come to the end of it's active life, the crank is growling like a mk2 Chavalier running on cooking oil, and it's used 2 litres of oil in as many weeks.

It was a 300 second hand engine out of a fire damaged car with unknown mileage/history, so it's done well to last 55,000 miles in the mk2 with the amount of track days and stuff it's done.

I know I have babbled on about going VR6, but to be honest I like the simplicity of the 16v and it's a well tried and tested unit for track use, so with that in mind I started looking for a replacement 9A/6A short 16v block to build up.

I've added these pics to my member's motors thread ..

Bore shot, hmmm could do with an 83.5mm rebore methinks

Hmmm, those piston rings have been blowing by...

That 92.8mm crank looks a bit heavy....

Taken the crank and block down to Martin (Hotgolf) he's lightening and knife-edging the crank and getting it balanced, the intermediate shaft bearings are fecked so he's got to sort those out.

Block is going to be bored +40 (83.5mm) and with the 92.8mm crank it should give 2033cc or 2035cc depending which calculator you use.

I've just this evening ordered from the USA a set of JE racing pistons with 10.8:1 CR and a set of those cheap Scat steel rods that are just too cheap not to give a whirl ($319 USD). http://www.importperformanceparts.net/

Hopefully should be a nice strong bottom end when we're finished all being well..

I'll run it on the same flowed head and modded inlet/exhaust cam set up for now, but the foundations should be there to add cams or whatever at a later date.
    (here we go again!!)

The 6A is the engine of choice Gary, good work! ;)

Sounds like it'll be a powerhouse once Hotgolf's done his bit and it's back together with all those new parts. Do you think your gearbox is up to it...? :p

6A/9A same thing really, different sump, I've thrown most of it on the scrap heap.

Gearbox will either last or it won't  Since Martin re-re-built it it's been fine since September

(Including 3 full open pit lane track days)

nice one GVK. Always nice to see someone planning their next mods when something goes wrong rather than throwing in the towel.

ITB's would be sweet, shame they cost so much.

    200bhp at last maybe?!

Sounds very nice indeed.Bulletproof springs to mind. Can i recommend arp mains as well to complement a particularly strong package.

I'msure you're aware but the rods will need rebushing(scat cocked it up). No big deal though.

Spent too much on the rest of the car getting it how I want it to drive on track to throw in the towel, I'd never get it back, so just got to keep plodding on:lol:

The rods will not require re-bushing, the tall block rods they do came with a 20mm wrist( ;) ) pin instead of 21mm, but if you buy the JE pistons cheap then you're sorted.
And, as these are the 144mm rods the pins are 20mm so no probs there.

    Can you elaborate?
I am running rods which are'nt Scat but look very similar... and have small end rattle. I suspect material in the rods small end bushes.

What do you do to make em good again? (replace them with amco bronze/aluminium bronze bushes or something?)

    thanks in advance
    bill
