Finally got round to fitting the TT rack. Not as straightforward as I hoped but also not a major task. I let my mate do it, mainly for the superior skills he has but also as he wouldn't mind chopping my car up as much as I would. lol He didn't take as many pictures of the job as I had hoped though but the main parts were captured. The TT mounting points are much wider than the Golf so drastic action was required. Once mounted to the subframe it was the task of checking how it would fit through the bulk head & marry up to the column. This took quite a bit of trial fitting & cutting bit by bit. The bulkhead had to be cut quite a lot in the end as the angles were so different from rack to rack. The good part was that the TT rack & Golf column were a perfect size match, he just had to shorten the steering knuckle and re-drill it as it was too long. (This wasn't pictured) The I had the TT steering arms turned down from M16 to M14 to match the rod ends I had drilled the hubs for. These were too long to get any kind of drive-able alignment so we shopped about 15mm off of them. Next up was the PAS pipes as these are also different, luckily I had a MK4 Golf TDI in the yard for spares and we managed to get these to fit pretty well with minimal effort. We modified the MK4 6 speed PAS / starter mounting bracket and this fitted perfectly when mounting it to a gearbox bolt. Then we needed to mount the MK4 fluid res which was also pretty easy and look quite neat I think. That's about all I have pictures wise, we set the car up by eye and it seems to drive very nice with a noticeable difference to the steering. IIRC I have 0.7 less turns from lock to lock now. Iv'e booked the car in the the alignment doing properly before I can really test it though.
Not sure how much camber this mod gives you but if you need even more for a more aggressive track set up you can fit MK2 TT bottom ball joints onto the MK1 TT arms. I have done this on my MK1 TT along with camber plates to get over 3 degrees of camber. The MK2 ball joints provide most of the extra camber. http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8520673#p8520673 http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=931034
Hopefully be all sorted by then. Not as loud or probably as quick as the A4 but it should go around the twisty bits a bit quicker. Only 275bhp so 100bhp and 250Lb/ft down on the A4 but probably about 500Kg lighter.
This is an interesting thread! Those coil overs are epic too! Does anyone know if the suspension geometry between the mk2 and Mk3 golfs are much different and if this upgrade would be beneficial to a Mk3 Golf? Mostly concerning the shock tower locations and caster adjustment? Thanks!
hello, I am interested in doing this in a seat ibiza 6k, I am looking for a wider road, is the tt mk1 route possible in the ibiza 6k? Is it a good improvement in behavior?
The top mount locations are different to believe, they need different the turret moving form what I’ve read.
Dragging up an old thread up i'm afraid, but i'm curious to trying the TT wishbones on a Mk3 GTI - however i'm wondering what is stopping me using Mk3 late-GTI/VR6 hubs? Do the TT balljoints have a different taper to the late Mk3 GTI balljoints? I've not bought one of each to compare yet, but hoping someone has previously and can warn me if so! Thanks
