Some of you will have seen this here, but I've bought what appears to be an ex-Group N race car. Spec at the moment: Chassis: Fully seam welded shell, recently resprayed. Won't win any concourse events, but it looks good enough for a track day car. Old style full race cage, including to front struts, and rear struts. Spax coilover suspension with 450lb springs all round. Wheels - less said the better. Will shortly be OZ Superleggera Race 17*7 with Toyo R888 all round. Might see if I can stretch the budget to Ultraleggeras, but I doubt it. Completely stripped interior with Corbeau seat and Willans harness No underseal or anything like that. Will have to avoid salty roads! ATL Bag tank with side fillers Motorsport exhaust. Engine Blue printed (supposedly) KR with uprated metering head Big oil cooler. A few other bits that Chris_Eyre will fill us in on. Uprated clutch that is no fun in traffic. I.C.E Yea right. lol Pick one: The heater works. Or the exhaust sounds like it's right next to you. Some pics (excuse the cat - he's a right tart): Outside All nice and straight. Uprated oil cooler next to radiator Interior with rear seat now removed Rear strut brace Centre Gauges. Fuel and temp guages in dash not wired up any more. ATL Bag tank Naff M3 mirrors. Will be replaced ASAP as they look daft, and I can't see a bl00dy thing out of them. Corbaeu seat with Willans 5 point harness. However, the belt that runs up from under the seat between the legs is missing. The brakes are currently not very good, and the engine has a healthy misfire, so a bit of work is needed before tracking her. Can't wait though. Edit: Meant to say that the rear seat belts are now connected to the eyes in the chassis, as opposed to lightly tied around the cross brace.
Nice one Alex, glad it's home & all sort - looking forward to seeing it again at Donny. Hard-as-nails wheel advice, freely available!
do you need a license to run track days? ... im thinking about doing it myself, and how much on average does it cost to keep the car running on the track, do you have to pay any sub or anything? thanks guys i assume there is begginer / novice groups aswell
You only need a normal road licence, that's it. Most tracks insist on a helmet and long sleeves, and there is usually tuition available at an extra cost. Track day prices vary from track to track. Quite a few of us are going to Donnington on the 5th of November, which is 99 for the day. There are different groups too, novice, intermediate, expert.
I'm fairly certain they are opel manta rims, any chance of a decent piccy? If they are you will be surprised the price opel manta resorers will pay for them.
They are, defnitely. "Kerrching", and "cashback" spring to mind then! Point Alex to any owners / restorers sites you know of
Which would be mine, i had a white set off a knightsbridge edition on my rocco, which i sold in the local paper as "offers" some bearded geezer phoned up and offered me 200 for them with the half bald super slippy remoulds that were on them, that was about 5 or six years ago now. Worth mentioning though, that those rims are the wrong offset, but not my much (ET30 or 32 iirc)
I was pondering that, but even though it's a bolted cage? Suppose so - shouldn't make a difference really.
Blimey, and I was going to try and convince the tyre place to bin them for me!! Thanks guys. They shouldn't be on the car for long, so not too worried. They're not rubbing or anything.
You wouldn't get much trouble tbh, they just made the steering a bit heavier and caused a wee bit of tramlining on my rocco but the mk2 is a heavier car.
Car looks liker it will be a goot track tool after a few tweeks, Is that the ex Stealth Racing Mk2 16 Turbo Technics car in the backround?
It is. It's going to be sold to fund this project, much to my disappointment. [:^(] However, I think 3 Golfs is one too many.
