I bought this car about a year ago and have since done a few events and trackdays, but it is starting to show a few signs of wear here and there and I thought it best to give it a general tidy up and try and make it a little quicker.

The original plan was just to paint the engine bay, paint inside and add a few bits, but that seems to have sprillaled out of control and it is pretty much getting a full rebuild..

I dont have a lot of time before the season starts, plus being in my final year at uni doesnt help, but I seem to be making good progress working on it most weekends especially considering this is the first time I have done something like this. Just hope I have not taken on to much!!

I thought it might be a good idea to just gradually add the pics, as it might get a bit boring!

    As it was...

Dont know why, but this is the only pic I can find of the engine before it came out...

Yes, Ellon. Pretty good setup and seemed to give very accurate figures. Nearly new standard Porsches were making slightly bellow quoted power!

Getting over those claimed figures would have been nice, but unlikely!

It didnt do well at all. 161 atf and 135 atw. It at least highlighted a few problems though. It had just been to a 'specialist' the week before to just give it a general going over but on the rollers it ran way to rich and had a big flat spot at 5k.

After racing at Boyndie I checked over everything that I wrongly assumed the 'specialist' would have checked and found that the connection from the dizzy to the coil was all corroded and needed replacing. The rotor arm and dizzy cap also needed replacing and after that there was a big improvement and sorted the flat spot.

I will be back @ Ellon soon though and hope to see much better figures.

Btw, you know anyone local who knows their carbs?

    Grinder oot..

Wire wheel got nailed within 15 mins.

So I got a bigger one from a motorfactors for less that focus do it all want for the small one!

This took a lot longer than I thought it would, but pretty pleased with it

This is some of the underseal that came off. I will weigh it asap. Dont think it will be that much, but every little helps!

One interesting thing I did find was that it has had some seam/stitch welding previously! It will be getting a lot more too.

I can't recall if there is some in there as std, but that doesn't look like OE welding, so assume it is..

Ricky Gauld is a local `legend` with carb set up, 01466 780190 ... he`s away in the hills but worth it I`m told; even has a set of rollers. A colleague took his `old` Elan there for set up and was well pleased.

I took the Mk2 to Ellon end of last year and had some interesting readings - lower than previous but car felt no different. Did raise a thread on here to discuss different RR`s and it appears that Dyno Dynamics consistently show lower than others. Main thing is that the car runs well; it`s a pity they don`t tune NA engines up there. I was very pleased with their approach and the checks they did prior to the power runs.

Would be interested in that `specialist` ... by PM ?

Simon @ Japperformance is a top guy and very professional in his approach.

How much lower were your mk2's figures than other rolling roads?

    Thanks dubya_vee :)

Weighed that underseal that I took off...

0.8 kg! I reckon I took off well over 1kg though as it goes flying everywhere and that was just the stuff I had managed to sweep up.

Finished taking off sealer from nearside wing...

Underseal from nearside arch was well over a kilo

Started removing bits for taking out engine...

Removed heater box, saved almost 4kg's

Exhaust manifold came off no probs, which was nice.

Chuffed with my new halogen lights I got for 20 notes.

When I did my Mk1 there was 4kg from each wheel arch, but I scraped mine off so probably managed to bag a lot more that came off.

There is loads on the bottom of the floor pan.

    Just a couple of pics...

Got the engine on the stand

Took the dash out too. Doesnt weigh that much actually, but it all helps.

Was thinking about welding a bar between the cage above the steering column as would hopefully stiffen it up a bit more and help give me somewhere to mount the gauges.

Here are some pics from last wkend, managed to get a fair bit done. Stripped the remaining bits left on the car before getting ready to sit it on its side...

Now it was time to take off the underseal off...

It looks like the car has already been seam welded here but there are still a lot of areas left to do...

I also removed the brackets that are no longer used. There are still a few more to come off...

Thats pretty much how it stands now. I have been working on it this wkend but no pics really worth taking as it just looks the same, its pretty time consuming getting the sealer out of all the tight spots grinders can't reach. Thanks to Pol for the tips on removing sealer, blowtorch and scrapers sorted that out.

Aiming to prep the bay and inside for welding next wkend and a mate is going to hopefully get hold of a TIG welder. Also ordering new wheels and brakes this week too.
