Right then guys, thought I'd introduce myself and my car. It's not much but it's mine and I love it. Been floating about on this forum for a bit, some very helpful advice

Having been aircooled for the past 4 years I had to sell my bug due to no garage to carry on keeping it uptogether. 3 winters out in the open was beginning to take it's tole and having exhausted every option she had to go.

So being 19, a 2nd year uni student and huge petrolhead (possibly the most unpractical 3 things?!?) I was forced to look for something a little more practical. Not too practical though of course and I certainly wasn't going to be settling on any saxo's, corsa's or sh*t like that. It had to soften the blow of loosing the Bug.

Roll in the the GTI. Bought from a guy who seemed sound and had owned it the past 5 years. The car isn't immaculate by any means but seems tidy and is pretty original (no boy'd up tat here thankyou)

This is how it looked when I picked it up:

Picked it up and started to drive it home. 20 mins into the journey the coolant light starts flashing. Checked the MFA - oil temp 140! I pull over, open the bonnet and it's completely emptied the coolant reservoir. By this time it's getting dark so a quick phonecall to the AA results in being towed home with a suspected head gasket. After a 7 hour trip I finally get home with it. Arses.

Having a look over a few days later it appears the power steering belt is very loose. Turns out the water pump wasn't being turned properly. Fiver later and a new belt happy days!

    And after a clean up:

Roll on 6 months or so and I'm slowly collecting bits for it. Just the usual work so far - cambelt, oil change etc, cooling system overhaul, thermostat, rad, loads of other bits not worth mentioning and got a local specialist to do the valve stem seals.

Had some Sebrings powdercoated that I got cheap and picked up some Rallye half leather seats and installed some VDO's I swiped out of my bug before it was sold.

Work is slow on the car as I'm a full time student with limited time and funds however the GTI bug has bitten hard

Work should progress more at xmas hopefully when I have a whole list of stuff to sort - top priority to sort a few elecy probs out, wet door card, change the lift pump.

Thats all for now, see you about the forum

Would have thought it's just had a carpet change at some point. The interior was very mix and match when I bought it.

nice car, the grey carpet actually looks quite well against the rest of the interior! A quick check of the sticker in the boot or the chassis should clear up whether it was always a GTi or not shouldn't it?

I really like these wheels! I have them on my red 16v, think they really suit em. Nice VAG wheels look much better than all the after market crap!!!

In all seriousness though the seats were paid for from flogging some old bug bits I had about and the powdercoating was paid for from selling the RJ's. The rest of the bits are courtesy of this forum and the local scrappy. I have a fair bit of paperwork, service history etc, owners manual and data checked it when bought. I even have a newspaper advert from 1994 when it had 24,000 on the clock and was being sold for 8k which is quite cool so I'm sure it wouldn't have been a driver before for that price.

How would I clarify that it is a genuine GTI out of interest? Just for peace of mind.

you could perhaps note down the chassis number and use the link on this forum to see what extras and specs it came with from the factory, then from what that says would determine weather it was a gti from the factory.

    hope this helps

    cheers.

Build sticker inside the boot, if it's still there. Engine code should be PB.

I apologise in advance as this isn't the most exciting update in the world but I'm compelled to update as motivation. What I wouldn't give for a garage rather than working out in the drive.

Car has been neglected somewhat recently, but have had a few days to spanner on the mk2 over the xmas hol. Jobs that I've been putting off for months have finally been sorted.

Replaced the lift pump in the tank that was completely dead. Main pump had been working overtime because of this. Door membranes have also been replaced and touch wood so far, no soggy doorcards. Helpful guide on here by Beetie which is great http://www.clubgti.com/FORUM/showthread.php?t=182265&highlight=door+membrane

Again a minor mod but gearstick has been swapped for a mk4 item. You'll need to cut the shaft (got a spare one incase I want to go back to the golf ball) but a worthwhile move as changes feel a lot smoother.

The front discs are also shot and with the MOT looming in the next couple of months something needed to be done. Managed to source some 16v hubs with near new bearings and 256 calipers reasonably cheap. Currently drying from a paint freshen up. Brembo discs courtesy of GSF and club discount! Should be a worthwhile upgrade. Just waiting for this snow to bugger off to fit.

Rather ****ed that someone has dented the rear quarter panel but here are a couple of pics after a good clean last week. Now sporting tart stickers in the from of club gti logo and some Hella spotlight badges

    Thanks.

Brakes and hubs are now on. Quite shocked at just how bad the discs and wheel bearings were. Plenty of play and the discs both had a good 2-3 mm lip ground inwards from the edge [xx(]

No pics but I'm sure you all know what hubs and 16v calipers look like.

    Thats a nice looking car,red & black works well:thumbup:

After seeing your wheels i have decided to find a set of sebrings for my Mk2 16v track car & paint them black, i know their not the lightest wheels but i think they suit the Mk2 really well.

    Simon.
