Taking the engine out my mk2 1.8 golf. Just wondering whats the best way to undo the spring clamps holding the down pipe onto the manifold...

I know theres a VW tool for it, dont want to buy one just to use it once!

    Cheers

got one undone with a screw driver, guess the other one will come pretty easy once everything else is disconnected and the engines ready to come out!

i've got the silly tool somewhere in the garage, u'll need it if you put new clamps on (oldens might be corroded badly).

Just buy a cheap exhaust clamp from halfords, put the clampy pit outside of the bolts and loosen it with an adjustable spanner!

Something like that! Its virtually impossible to get the C clamps back on without the tool or a exhaust clamp too. P.S. make sure you use new C clamps!

Well actually, try to get a GTI downpipe and manifold then you can use a GTI exhaust system and you never have to use exhaust clamps again!

Im just taking the engine out at the moment, going to stip it and attempt a rebuild....its outa the car I wrecked!

Dont know if I'll ever rebuild it never mind put it back in! I would like to bung it in another car though, maybe a 1.3 donor car, and use it for the track! It looks in pretty good nick for the 111k its done!

    Cheers

Not really, the two lugs fit in the holes on the clips and expand them to fit over the joint.
