'89 Mk2 Golf GTI 8v -> ABF -> VR6 -> VR6 Turbo

Another start to finish reader! Good work there!

 

Sorry about the lack of updates and now the lack of images, Photobucket want $40/Month for third party hosting. I will try and get these uploaded to my own website soon.

 

I know I still need to sort out my image hosting after the Photobucket issue but heres a quick update.


freshly painted, genuine wings with G60 style cutouts for the clips and additional clearance.

Brand new G60 arches fitted.

Those G60 arches really need some wide wheels now.

Eventually I will get the rest of the car painted but at the moment im still collecting turbo parts.

 

Made a start polishing the compressor housing.

 

Progress has been slow i've been doing an ABF conversion on my girlfriends 1.3 Mk2. This is now finished so it's time to start my turbo build!

My VR6 next to the recently ABF'd early spec Mk2. It was originally jade green but was respray black at some point with red glitter. A bit of a shame that its not original but the girlfriend loves it.


Started to strip down the N/A bits.


Swapped in a brand new set of genuine Bosch 440cc green giants.


BST intake manifold with standard injector rail for now.






I had to grind a bit of material off the alternator to get the SRI to fit, no big deal.


While I had the front end apart I remove the leaky pattern part thermostat housing and water pipe. The Dirko sealant was necessary as the parts were warped!


Replace with a nice Eurowise cast aluminium housing and stainless steel water pipe.


Looks great and hopefully won't leak!


Started to mock up the intercooler. Will go for a bigger one eventually.


Early VR6 aluminium valve cover with two -10 AN fittings welded on and painted Nardo Grey.


Turbo isn't even on the studs in this picture, it really doesn't fit with the ATP manifold as my car is RHD. Im going to make an elbow to move the turbo forwards. I can't really justify the cost of a fancy tubular manifold yet.





I did consider flipping the turbo 180 degrees but it looks rubbish and fowls the wastegate mount.


19 row Mocal kit to fit.


Im really impressive with the quality. Can't wait to get it fitted, I just need to find a suitable place that fits with the intercooler and allows me to keep the twin lamp grille.

I should be able to update this thread more frequently now but it is a driveway build so it depends on the weather at the moment.

 

Thanks to terrible weather at the weekend, not a lot of progress was made so I was mainly just cleaning and painting parts ready to fit.


I've painted the exhaust housing and cartridge VHT gloss black. I doubt it will last long but at least it looks good for now.


Started running the intercooler pipes.


Painted the oil catch can the same colour as the valve colour.


The love the way the gloss black looks against grey.

 

Valve cover and catch can fitted.


Made an elbow to move move the turbo forward.


Exhaust housing fitted.


I will need to re-route the heater hoses.


Rest of the turbo fitted. I need to finish polishing the compressor housing, I also rotated it 90 degrees after taking this picture. The bonnet needed to be notched but no big deal.


I wanted to fit the intercooler behind the rear bumper and without needing to hack the bumper up. For this to happed I had to remove the lower slam panel support.


I made a bracket to brace the slam panel to the bumper bar, using 3mm steel bar. Everything will be re-painted when the weather gets a bit warmer.


Intercooler fitted using four of the mounting points so its nice and sturdy.


It's starting to come together.

Oil feed line fitted. Excuse the dirt, the whole engine bay needs a good scrub.


Catch can hoses fitted, I still need to wrap them to protect from heat.


Tidied up the HT leads with some braid and gave the whole bay a general tidy up. Fitted a Mk6 header tank as it gives clearance for the catch can lines and allowed me to fit my billet Forge cap.
Painted the strut top caps Nardo grey to match the valve cover and catch can.

Next jobs are the two charge pipes and to make a start on the downpipe.

 

Getting there, love the detail like the OEM style VR6T badge. Where did you get the rain tray from?

 

@Finite - The rain tray was from SWG, they come up on ebay very occasionally.

I think Photobucket have pretty much killed forums now but I will continue to post occasionally.




Diverter valve fitted, sadly I will have to recirculate it as im running standard management with a Stealth map.


20mm oil return. I wanted to run an AN line but AN-12 would be too small for a Holset and -16 would be ridiculous.*


Made a tight elbow from the compressor housing using parts of the factory V band setup.


Bought a Mocal 19 row kit a while ago which still needs mounting. Im thinking of putting it in place of the standard bonnet latch and using aerocatches.

 

It does now that i've notched the bonnet frame.

 

Solid front mount, 1.3 Gearbox mount and a cut down Mk3 rear engine mount.

Clearance seems ok but I will only know for sure once the car is driveable again, im sure something will need tweaking lol.

Oil return welded onto sump. 19mm braided hose covered with HEL fire sleeve.




Made up the intake pipe but its only temporary, I wan't to replace the silicone bend with a 1 piece lobster back style pipe.


Aerocatches to secure the front bumper, hidden by the numberplate.


Welded up all the spare holes in the rad support and painted it Nardo Grey.



Next job is to make the downpipe.

 

All finished and MOT passed.

Running a base map at the moment, taking it to Stealth Racing soon.
