    yep 16v

    Different bolts ? hmmm
how - size, strength, stretch, shape, tightening requirements?

I've gone with fibre gasket from ABF (83.5mm)- gsf no -111VG0240 and
bolts gsf no - 011VG0010- these are given on gsf for ABF, KR engines.

my experience with MLS gaskets so far leaves me a bit sceptical of them.- (its cost me several hours and new bolts, coolant, gaskets and oil)

regards -'I think you'll find its something else'-strip down due to blown hg on unported head(visible), the ported head reinstall with MLS -unknown

Not sure exactly what the differences are, i assume length/stretch spec differs slightly due to the gasket not being quite the same thickness/squishyness?

the spec for tightening is the same though :)

as long as everything else is sorted you'll have no issues with the fibre gasket

Maybe it is the head gasket then does seem that way but still very odd, never had a problem myself and always use MLS gaskets these days, my ABF is going strong with one. Think it was a victor reinz one...
another possibility is that there waas still a bit of oil compressed in one of the bolt holes, try re-torqing?

if its oil in the holes you can crack the block, so best make sure they are all 100% clean and dry before you put the new bolts in :)

    latest in this saga...
head back on,bolt holes dried out, torqued as intended, losing a bit of water on cool down i think.
torqued bolts an extra 1/4 turn.
    drained coolant, oil changed
trouble starting-think this was an air lock in coolant-blew down rad hose into block to clear.
now starting, white smoke appears once warm.
did compresion test on P2 =180psi or 12.5 bar
put a couple of capfuls down into P2 chamber to test if rings good
compression test result -needle off scale -300 psi, further tests and noreading on gauge - compression tester now fooked.
what next? if i take the head off again can i check cylinder & rings with vernier calipers ?
i've had 2 heads on now and P2 is a 1.5bar lower than the rest-
    p1-14
    p2-12.5
    p3-14
    p4-14

    Resurrrection alert.
    2litepinto is sort of right.

Eventually I figured out the smoke was from a dodgy oil cooler leaking across inside itself. but P2 is still low.

I've now got a ongoing mystery cold start, tending to blow a litre of oil past oil filter o ring (done at least 3 times when repeatedly cranking due to cold start issues)
and tbh once I'd got the oil cooler swapped I've been driving it the last couple of years. sure i must have checked compression upon final rebuild or I'd forgotten low P2 tbh.

having recently done comp test on warm engine, cranked 5 secs, fully open acc my results iirc were 17,15,17,17 (P2 was 17 when tested with oil in it) these are higher than those a couple of years ago which were 14,12.5,14,14.

oil test proves it's the cylinder ?
    So P2 is low.
what are my options to remedy ?

depends whats up with it, since the compression jumped up with a bit of oil in this suggests its rings. it could be a case of new rings and hone, or if there is more serious damage a piston may be needed, or a complete block. cant really know till you have a look :(

    Thanks RJ,
I've put a few 1000 miles on (maybe 5) since ported head went on a couple of years ago and first noticing the low comp on P2. As its not been my daily driver for a while I'd forgotten about low P2. Guess I need to get head off and measure it to confirm what the next step is
Being a 6A/ACE bottom end what's the largest it could be bored out to ?
If its a hone n fit larger rings hopefully it'll not be too painful/costly.

also - anyone got the spec or part no for the bolt (hex head, 8mm?, tapered end) that clamps the gearbox to engine mount beneath the coolant expansion tank?

    assuming its 020 gearbox, N 10234204 - M10x40

as for the other questions many out there more qualified than I, tbh I would strip it down now see what the dealio is then start a fresh thread with pics

Thank you ! - lets see how much VW are gonna charge for a bolt.

Yep -will open her up to measure, check tolerances n post info in due course
