Hi,what could cause timing to move a bit after setting it.ive set mine at"0" degrees ran it For approx 300-400 miles and it seems to have retarded itself a 2 or 3 degrees.so I reset it And it may do it again.clamp is tight!!!
That's what I've been advised is right for a 1600eg k jet with advance and retard. Ive heard that a setting before TDC is not right. Sorry looking at my first post I meant the diamond marker not a "0"marker But zero degrees is what I meant. It's set with diamond marker on flywheel at centre of inspection hole at 900ish rpm.
A loose clamp on the dizzy, loose timing belt, wear on the dizzy shaft or gears....or a dodgy timing light.
Just set my EG race engine using a snap on digital timing light. My engine needs a lot of advance for max power, meaning a non standard 8 degrees at tickover. What I noticed while playing with different dizzies is potential wear in the dizzy drive cog. Think the early engines were a bit poor in the oil lube supply in this area, hence the wear. Later engines do not appear to have this problem, from my box of 30 used dizzies.. Something to have a look at, maybe Jon
yes this is correct for the 1.6, maybe check if the intermediate shaft sprocket woodruff key is still there and bolt tight
^^it is the manufacture basic setting to operate at intended marketed power, when used with generic fuel. In practice, for best enthusiasts torque and power it needs to way more advanced that what you read.
Aye I noticed that with both my 1.6 GTI and 16v both were flat when set to standard timing both ran better with 5 to 6 degrees more advanced
Because when these things were written by VW and later repeated by external publications, that is the recommendation that would have been given to a service technician for less come back if there was a problem later on. Those generic settings are not what tuners or budding hands on enthusiasts ever used.
Ok that's cleared that one up,everything is in place and normal so I suspect maybe a slight wear/fault with dizzy I've seen recon dizzys I think on classic vw or somewhere like that.
Playing with my 1600n race EG today. Next outing Croft Easter Monday: Sprint. Robbed the carb bodies off my (crashed..) mk2 45DCOE's Exactly similar to what was on there. Spanish DCOE 45's Swapped chokes and jets over. Engine now seems somewhat sweeter, after carb balancing and initial idle adjustments. GS6 cam means it scares small animals and children at tickover still. Rattles window panes at 5 yards.. And its only an iddy bitty 1600 Jon
Sounds great,I like the idea of carbs one day if the k- jet dies.just out of interest where do get an intake manifold made To take carbs.
Manifolds are easy to come by, but k-jet is great for a road car. Fast, cheap to run, minimal maintenance. The engine spec is full race, fancy head 40:35, GS6 cam, 12.5:1 etc so it likes about 35 degrees at high revs Out in it on easter monday Croft sprint Jon
