As you can see from the above pic the standard mk1 GTI cable, although it fits perfectly in the custom bracket, is a few inches too long for the ball-end on the ITB throttle assembly.

If I chop the cable does anyone know of source for a socket fitting that I can clamp/screw on?

Or am I better off wrapping the bare cable around the ball and using a clamp?

Not much to it really, the ball-end is pictured above - the cable is resting on it.

According to the manufacturer these two parts make it "Golf 16v" specific

Thanks, I'll give them a bell.

Meanwhile, here are pics of the linkage - it's literally just those two pieces inbetween the TBs

Could you not extend the bracket?

Certainly an option but it makes the run of the cable a bit awkward. I've ordered a kart "barrel" cable extender so I should be able to remove a section of cable and rejoin the end piece.

The ECU is a DTA S40 Pro so I'll be running wasted spark. The coil is a Ford/Bosch item (sitting on a tailored JMR bracket/dizzy block off).

ABF so using the internal trigger for now. However, JMR also has an external solution in development - just waiting for an ABF pulley trigger wheel.

got a polo rear oil seal, trigger wheel and sensor on mine. Seems pretty reliable, although had 1 sensor die in 7 years. luckily I ground the corner off the block so could swap it in-situ without pulling the (02A) box off.

I was going to suggest that taking up some of the slack in the throttle cable at the bulkhead end as well, might have helped.
Otherwise i've used the metal bits out of electrical choc block / terminal strip to do what you've done with your black thingy.
