Hi all, So after losing my MK3 Vento/Jetta to belly rot i found this little beauty on eBay. A 1991 Golf Mk2 GL 1.8 8v Carb Auto 77000 miles with full MOT and service history including 2 timing belt changes. One just last year! Heated front seats, metal sunroof and GTI grill. All for 900! Needs a new front wing, new exhaust (which i already have) and there's a fuel leak in the engine bay somewhere, i'll be looking into it in the morning. Start at the carb and work out and down :banghead: More to follow, cheers
So this morning I've located the leak and as usual, good old Pierburg is to blame! At least it's coolant and not fuel... i think  The Wax stat is kaput and the pipes that the rubber hoses connect to have perished/snapped off. It's clearly been bodged before now so while I've ordered a new part from VW Heritage (for 72! :facepalm, I've had to re-bodge the bodge temporarily. Now I'm no zip tie technician and I don't condone this type of "fix", but in this instance, the leak has all but stopped and the new part should be here tomorrow. I'll also need to order new hoses.
Someone, at some point, has thought it wise to zip tie the peg so that it doesn't touch the adjustment screw. Anyone any idea why? It does rev high at idle
Picked up this big fella in Stoke-on-Trent the other day. Just waiting on the new clamp and hangers to arrive so I can get it on the motor.
A few parts arrived today, thanks to VW Heritage. Now I can get that old, plastic (crap) wax stat off and replace it with a shiny new metal one. And the hoses too.
I was trying to figure out why my rear wiper isn't working and after about 2 seconds of investigating I saw why... In the rubber sleeve sending power to the boot lid. I'll get that sorted when it stops raining! Also a pic of the new head unit as promised
Ok, big-ish update (pic heavy). First of 2 days off so, while the lad was at nursery, I thought I'd get a couple of jobs done. Job 1: Replace leaking wax stat and hoses with new metal part and fresh rubber. Old unit (hoses off) This 2nd screw was a pig to get at and very nearly rounded! But it eventually gave up. Look at the state of it!!! :what: About as close to rounding as you can get while still getting it out New unit on and hoses attached. The hoses VW Heritage sent were slightly too small for the new wax stat but a little spray grease and swearing and they're on securely. And done, no more coolant leaking onto the manifold and giving me a mysterious smokey entrance everywhere I go! :banghead: I did notice however that the Pierburg mount is kaput and wobbling so I'll be replacing that asap
Job 2: Old knackered exhaust off. New system on Started with the old backbox (held on with zip ties and will power as usual) It actually ended up being the easiest part to remove! The centre silencer was pretty new but the clamp was as rusty as a rusty thing. still came off ok tho, lots of WD40! Old vs New After a couple of hours of hammering, rain delays and eventually the trusty angle grinder, it all came off and the rear box was an accident waiting to happen. Was held together with paste and hope I think! Shortly after removing the old system I realised it had to fit over the rear beam and had to break out the grinder again. Luckily my sleeve clamp had arrived and it wasn't an issue Break time! another down pour! front half in place and pasted. Clamped after it dried a bit Rear half on hangers with new rubbers Clamped and pasted Before After Sounds great, not too loud but deeper. I'm happy with it
The time has come for my 1995 Vento TDI (Jetta mk3) to move on to a new home, so I've been removing the parts I'm going to sell on as the guy coming to collect only really wants the engine
I've spotted a full set of steel wheels online for 15! Tyres aren't great but all legal. I might have to go get em, clean em up and spray em a nice silver (G60 poor man's reps) What do you guys think? All comments and suggestions welcome
non of the images are working unfortunately, dont think dropbox is the best for image hosting Do you mean the 14" MK3 steels? if so they look alright
I'm using google images, bit of a faff mind. few here: https://www.lifewire.com/free-image-hosting-sites-3486329
did you fix the 2e2 3/4 point unit yet? if not check here: http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?124945 its probably a vacuum hose issue or something up with the electric control valves on the back. could be something as simple as a popped fuse on the ignition power to them
Not yet no, but That's very helpful cheers mate. Eventually I'd like a weber 32/34 auto unit but I don't have 300 to spare!
