Basically For the first 5-10 minutes on a cold start It's running like an absolute pig. Feels/sounds like a misfire and I have to keep the revs at at least 2000rpm or it'll die a quick death. I then have to pump the accelerator like a madman to get it running again, but once it's reached temp it runs totally fine.

    Ok update.
I've bit the bullet and ordered a Webber 32/34 DTML for my auto. Should bring me a little reliability if nothing else.
Vac auto chokes are too complicated for their own good. I'll have to learn how to use a manual choke but it'll be worth it.

Major downsize, I'm on public transport for a week or so

sounds like autochoke has failed to me, or its in wrong position or your coolant feed to the carb is poor

Yeah it was the autochoke. one of the vac pipes was completely useless, it did nothing. But it was a cheap knock off unit I tried. If it had worked, great. But it didn't so I'm getting the refund and the Weber arrived today so Friday it's getting fitted and set up properly.

Any advice on using a manual choke would be great as I've never had one haha

I realise this build thread isn't a proper build thread, but it's important to know your limits and safety is first as I've got a kid in the car too [:s]

and when the weather pics up they'll be many more updates and work to crack on with

Weber all fitted and running like a dream  along with new plugs, roter arm and dizzy cap.

The difference in performance is immediate and awesome. Picks up and pulls much better, feels quicker and sounds nicer. Very happy with the results.

Looking good and running right  There do seem to be some of these about with good shells I was tempted by one (similar spec and year) around Christmas for a similar realistic price, but it was in Devon. A bit too far to go to check it out in bleak weather.

So jobs to do soon as:

    oil and filter change
    repair rear wiper wiring
rocker cover gasket change w/ new bolts
replace sunroof seal (just need another dry day where I'm free, which is rare)
remove the annoying security 'one way' screws on the rear number plate - noticed its very rusty behind so may have to get that repaired or source a replacement.

    Jobs in the long run:
fit the lowered springs on new shocks all round
new oem speakers all round, they're on their way out!
front wing and motorized antenna replacement
Hub adapters and T5 16" steelies
    other looks bits

So got a couple of bits done today. Things that have been irritating me

Job 1: Fix broken rear wiper wiring

    Before
    ljMIjBu.jpg

    After
    ZpV7bbm.jpg

Job was a bit of a pig as I had almost no wire to work with [xxx], but the rear wiper now works!

Job 2: Remove security screws on rear number plate

So I saw a youtube video of a guy flatting off two edges with a dremmel and unscrewing with mole grips. So I did that. And it worked!

It revealed the rust underneath, which wasn't as bad I expected so some Hammerite rust treatment is doing it's magic as I type.

Much better. Its frustrating to see the original fixings neglected twice over and the resulting damage. I just have the contact area top left on mine. Theres a foam backing gasket on ETKA, but I don't know if many were ever fitted to UK cars.

Yeah someone's been at it a few times, no idea why?!
at least it's minimal and the treatment will do until I can have it repaired properly. Love those tin number plates. Only got the surrounds as I couldn't bring myself to drill them

So took the car to VW Manchester yesterday for one of their free 'Health Checks'... Now I'm in no way convinced they checked very much, but sitting in the warm showroom looking at GTI's with a coffee beats lying under my car wobbling rubbers and getting leaked on!
It came back with a few issues (nothing I didn't already know really) that I'm in the process of fixing.

One however is the Brake Actuator... I assume they mean the brake pressure regulator? I know these can rust and seize.

I guess I should really just get under and look haha (but it's cold and wet )

another question. I've got -40mm springs waiting to go on (one day when i can be bothered). Will I have to adjust the brake pressure regulator to compensate for the difference in load? or is 40mm not really gona make a difference?
    cheers
