although the pads have same footprint there is a difference in pad material thickness

    I recall on my 16v... i had 256mm callipers on 280mm carriers
and i had to modifiy the slide pins

i may have had wrong pins but where you stick the 15mm spanner had to be shortened by about 2mm

its a nice mod and will fill the 15" wheels.....BTW. be carefull of offset on some 15" wheels

G60 callipers are bulkier than the 256mm

The hubs have a wider bolt centre two, where the caliper carrier bolts on, so go for the whole set-up
    Unless I'm mistaken

if you use 256mm discs then the 280 calipers will fit 16v 256mm carriers no problem, just they are a bit wider to suit the thicker 280mm disc and pad combo. This can give you wheel clearance issues depending on what you plan to fit, I'm sure there will be plenty guys out there who will be happy to swap their 256mm carriers for your 280s :)

yeah some of the mk3s have the same 256mm vented brakes as the mk2 16v, but watch out some of them have solid 256mm discs which are no use as the calipers are not wide enough
