Anyone with experience of these variants? I need a Mk2 fix and there's some nearby me in apparent good condition.

I'm a fan of 1.6 and 1.8 carb models. My mk1 CITI 1.6 carb pulls like a train!

Cheers, any automatic experience? Yeah it maybe too late to find a clean shell. The MOT checker has revealed the closest car is not worth looking at.

    2012

Nearside Outer Front Lower Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded (5.2.6)
Offside Outer Front Lower Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded (5.2.6)

    2017

Nearside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sill (5.2.6)

I'm disappointed this is on the MOT checker now "Test location: unavailable until further notice". It was a really useful addition to know if a car had been tested elsewhere at a different station after a fail, where it has been and likely change of owner based on that.

I had a 1.8 8v carb engine in mine before I put the 20v in, it went really well I don't think I would have taken it out if it didn't stop working, but I could have prevented it by servicing it when I got it, oops!

Mine is cold blooded for the first three miles, not wanting to pull without choke, but after that carburation is clean everywhere. It struggles to rev pas about 6, 6 and a half, but that's the smallish choke
limiting flow. Great on fuel as well , easy 40 round the doors

My first car just wanted to stall on the choke when cold. Dead [xx(] handy at junctions. Massive revs and clutch riding was the only way until the crankcase breather system was found to be blocked. No chance of those figures in an auto Mk2.

The car is gone now it was a mint looking 3dr driver in equally mint Montana Green.

    I've had 3 of these, 2 x 1.6s and a 1.8. If you're new to Mk2s they're a really good start point

That's the problem really my 8V GTI of 21 years is off the road so it would be a double downgrade as far as driving goes.

    That's what I thought.

Slush box is exactly what is says on the tin.

I had one for 3 months. It was reliable but horrid as a drive experience.

Converting an auto to manual isn't a big job.

The automatic engines are not as easy to reach high revs for some reason I always thought.

I've had a brief go in a 17 plate Mk7 DSG GTD. I forgot to try flat shifting as I was mostly trying to use it sequential style in manual mode on the stick. It's good, but still somewhat lacking in control and flexibility. In my old Mk2 for example I often miss gears out completely and use 1st, 3rd, 5th when cruising.

It would be for me outside at the moment. Even if I took the bits off of the GTI the gearbox needs a bit of work first. I think what I'm going to do is get the running gear on the GTI into order and take it from there.
