We always have set of winter wheels and tyres.
We used to have studded ones for the SAABs when we lived in North Derbyshire.

Now. The Mk4 25J has big front brakes so the minimum diameter is 16".
And. The 15" AUDI wheels and winter tyres, with PCD converters, won't clear.
So. Try to find decent 16" wheels to fit!

There are very few I would fit. 99.9% of aftermarket wheels are tarty and bling!

Most of the decent wheels are white, but the car is Silver, so any other colour than Silver will look wrong!

Of those available only this is meets my taste.
But they are only available in 5.5 x 16.
OK. This is the VW size for Mk4 winter wheels, but they seem too narrow!?

    I like these.
But Fondmetal's minimum order is 8 OFF!

I quite like these, but they are only available in white!

    Speed 2128.jpg

These would be OK except they are white with really bling blue lettering.

If only Compomotive would start making 16" TH2 again.

You do know in Germany for example, they just use 16 in steel wheels!

Thanks Eddie. I have considered steels, and if they would fit, with adaptors, I'd certainly use the AUDI 15" Steels.
But I fancied some nice lightweight rally oriented wheels for Lainey's Mk4 25J.
The AUDI Summer tyres are on 8 x 16 BBS RG Forged Mag. Alloy wheels.

Sorry to bang on with the steels but there are plenty of mk4 era cars that have a 5x100 16x6.5" ET40-ish spare wheel - shouldn't be too much bother to acquire 4.

Quite right in Sunny Surrey, but this is Frozen North West Eire!

Breakers are few and far between. The nearest is 40km away, and I don't have winter tyres to get there!lol
Mk4s on 16" steels are not common here. Most basic Mk4s are 15".
Mk4 16" alloys are awful, as are just about every VAG alloy wheel since they stopped using the Ronal R8s on the AUDI 80s.
But they never made 16" R8s!

    Oops ... [:$]

The Conti`s should be OK, they`re an approved Winter tyre for our other VAG friends ... Porsche :)

We currently use Nokian and Vredestein, have had Bridgestone in the past ... all being very good. Just as well, Storm Caroline has deposited 50 - 75cms of snow overnight :)

Trouble is there are no PORSCHE 'N', 'N1' or 'N2' tyres in 16"

Not all CONTI 830Ps are the same.
Runflats are rated 'E' for grip!
    SCARY!!!!!!!

Put winter wheels/tyres on A6 a couple weekends ago - they are just miles better when the temperatures drop.

Currently running some Falken Eurowinter HS439 (as they were cheap) and they are miles better than regular summer tyres, but not a patch on the Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds I have had previously.

Falken's will be scrap after this winter and I wont be buying them again. Next ones will be Michelin Pilot Alpin as they get consistently good reviews in US and Canadian car mags (as do the Dunlops).

    They are interesting documents!

So. The powers that be don't think much to the present P117 wet grip test!
It appears that a new, more meaningful one, is being promulgated!

Also. P117 - Wet Grip Test only looks at braking properties and, as such, does not reflect wet handling properties.

This is what we need to see more of:

    Interesting Rob.

The Falken ZEX 912 Summer tyres on the AUDI are very good!

I only buy asymetric tyres these days and have these on the Audi Steels. Bought them some years ago!
I wanted to try different tyres so bought a pair of each.
They are in storage at the moment until the 90Q 20V is refurbished.

The Yokos do have better wet grip than the Dunlops.

Looked on the CONTI site and noted that they consider these tyres are 'Extreme Performance'
Compared to the 830P which is 'High Performance'.

Weird thing though. If these are extreme performance tyres why is the lowest profile /60?

... due to the type of vehicle it would be fitted to i.e. a proper - ground clearing 4 x 4 - Hi Lux etc. ?

High Performance cars / tyres would / should not venture into extreme conditions ...

Ta so Rob but that is pretty meaningless really!

It's US. Their 'tires' are different to ours.
It is not comprehensive. No Continental tyres, etc.
It's subjective based on driver likes and dislikes.
We don't know how hard the contributor drives.
It does not give any details on sizes, profiles, or type of car.
It does not state where the tyres were made.
    Etc.
    Etc.
    Etc.

It is impossible to make an objective value judgement from another person's taste.
