Hi Folks. When I rebuilt the top end of Lainey's 25J I ported the head to some extent. Because the APY head was in such a poor condition, cracks and oval valve seats, I only did about an 80% job. I did not polish after the abrasive run. Even so the fuel consumption, now that the cam chain and Hall sensor wiring are fixed ia about 10% better. So is that 10% more power - 180ps to 198ps? Now I have a BAM head which is in perfect condition I shall do a 100% job. It took me a while to do the APY as I only had abrasive drums for the Dremel, and no long mandrel for the die grinder. I am looking for a fairly comprehensive kit similar to this US one: I searched Google UK and IE and everyone I found was unavailable at present. And, as usual, Frosts want 50 for a mediocre little kit. So, if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it. Thanks for looking. Dave.
I have loads of these they are used the first 2mm are dulled but would be fine on Aluminium Can't remember if I sent you any last time Another thing you can do is cut a slot in a bit of bar then rap emery band round it
Thanks sSon. You did send me those before as well as the small diameter bullet points. I am OK with what I have! I used them here: http://clubgti.com/showthread.php?2...sor-Problems&p=2466013&viewfull=1#post2466013 Slotted bar + emery is older than you are! Grandmother and sucking eggs springs to mind.lol Back in the early 1970s I was porting my SAAB SPORT TS block. (Cast Steel) I was using an electric drill (2000 rpm) and flex. drive. The bar bent. I pulled it out. The result was: One flex. drive - tied in knots. One shirt - ripped to shreds. One upper body - bleeding from navel to neck. Not sure what a bent bar, in a die grinder, at 22,000 rpm, would do!? Mike (sirguydo) has all ready warned me not to do anything risky whilst Lainey is not here to rush me to Casualty. Last three visits were due to: Falling 4m through scaffolding and ripping a 6" gash under my armpit. That hurt a lot! Falling 3m off a ladder while cutting a branch and bow-sawing my thumb to the bone. That hurt a lot too! Ramming a 7" splinter of Douglas Fir into the back of my finger right up to the back of my hand. That was quite painful as well. Mind you, the funniest one was dislocating my thumb when the first, and last ever, 'Snap-On' lambda probe socket I was using snapped. Well actually it cracked open.
To do a decent porting job, it takes quite alot of time and skill, while it need tools as a die grinder, Not something that spins 22000 rpm, its way to fast....to much unbalance which make it dificult to control with carbide tools, and rolls and flapwheels dont like that sort of speed either All the needed grinding stuff, carbide tools, flapwheels, etc... you need quite alot of these... and for only one or just a few heads, its often cheaper ( or not far off) to get it done by a pro, if taken everything into consideration.... porting, cut valve seats, skim head, etc
I am cash poor and time rich so I have plenty of time and would rather buy things that I can't make myself. I have been modifying ports since 1964. I believe I still have: 'Tuning for Speed and Economy' somewhere! 1964: Triumph Tiger Cub. HC piston. HL cam. Bigger Amal carb. (Electric drill, Rifler files and emery cloth) 1968: Greeves 24TFS. Bigger Amal Carb 1970s: SAAB SPORT TS. 1970s: SAAB 96V4 (pneumatic 22,000 rpm die grinder) I did not have to do anything to the 1974 ISDT MZ as it already gave 37bhp from 250cc I only have the old die grinder and a modern 'Dremel' type tool. It's larger and more powerful than any 'Dremel'. I did well enough with the APY and I'll do better on the BAM. The flap wheels did OK on the APY with the speed adjusted to suit. To do a proper job all I need are 1/4" mandrels and rolls to more easily get in deep. And polishing mops with 1/4" shanks.
I got a kit for JEGS in America in the end, was the best way. As I recall I paid 25.00 for the kit and 16.00 for the shipping. Cheaper through eBay I think. Shame to pay so much to ship, but I'm sure JEGS cover the duty. They do some good kit, but are mainly drag racing suppliers and do lots of v8 stuff. I've ordered parts off them Sunday afternoon and received them Tuesday Morning in the past! Amazing.
Thanks Tony. I had not found JEGS previously. I have seen all of these kits in various places, all roughly the same prices and delivery costs. Most are around $10 delivery within the US and I can use my An Post Address Pal account to have them shipped on for a further 16. (UK is 4 and I use it all of the time.) Saving about $20. I am in no rush, as it is freezing in the barn at the moment, so I shall keep looking. If I was to choose one of these I can't decide which! This one has fewer rolls, but does have mops and a 1/4" extension for carbide cutters. View attachment 5924 This one is just rolls, lots of them, but no extension. This is a good selection but again, no extension.
I found this on a UK website, but it is out of stock. I also found it on US sites and total price with shipping came to around $115. It's blooming expensive but just about spot on for my needs.
Just bought one of these so now OK from 4500 to 30000 rpm. Until it destroys itself like every other 'cheap and chuck' Lidl and Aldi tool that I have bought!
Yes. It's 6mm and 3.2mm. Which is a sod because my 40 years old pneumatic tool is 1/4"! All of the carbide cutters and flap wheels are 1/4"! All of the US porting kits are 1/4"! Looks like I am going to have to linish the collect out to 6.36mm! Damn - Damn - Damn
