Started rebuilding this a few weeks ago as I think my 1600 eg has lost a few horses over its life
And only put it in to get the car on the road initially. image.jpg ev block stripped
    Down and covered in gunge.

    Some parts ordered image.jpg

Painted block and put in new mains image.jpg

    Cleaned up Pistons image.jpg

Tried a new compression ring in the bore with an old ring next to it.
Old ring gap was .79mm new ring is .012 image.jpg

Bores were honed as one of the first jobs but didn't get a pic.
    Pistons are going in image.jpg

    New crank seals image.jpg

    New intermediate seal image.jpg

This is as far as I've got for now but not much more to do on bottom end image.jpg

Looks good. I really want to strip an engine. I think I might buy another 20v and build it for big power, that'd be a nice learning curve.

This is my first engine rebuild:o
So double/triple checking everything.and if I'm not sure I will just post on this thread
As there's advice( by the bucket load )and very useful.
I'm sure there's going to be some challenges when it comes to doing the head.
Although not planning to much with it..but stem seals are a must while it's apart.
Although you never know a cheapish cam might come up for sale;)

Gonna change this pulley also,it dosnt seem too bad but there's a small corner of key way missing/damaged. image.png
Not worth not doing for the sake of 15-20 quid.
But I think I may need a new bolt also and can't seem to find one, anybody know where to source the bolt for the crank/pulley.
    Thanks

New crank gear pulley and bolt fitted today.(damn that bolt is sooo tight)
Oil pump inspected for wear seems good and well within wear limits on integral cogs etc.
Oil strainer has been completely cleared of any crud.so I will re-use it. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

Good stuff, keep it coming, love an EG.
I have a race spec one, in a race spec mk1, and a complete original engine/gearbox/injection mk1 unit needing oversized pistons (poor bores) (anybody?)

My 1600 eg is coming out in 2/3 weeks for this 1800 EV.
I'm holding onto to the eg engine for a another future rebuild.dosnt hurt to have a couple of decent engines knocking about.

Do you build up your own race spec units.

I'm in the habit of doubling on car parts for my mk1 cabby.
    X2 engines x2 020 g/boxes, 3x k jet metering heads,and so on.

I'm sure there's people on here that could open a small parts store.

That should give the cab a bit of extra pep when it's all done . I have plans similar to yours, but the rebuild will hopefully be on the old engine first (particularly as I have no where to do it at present). I've never tackled it before either so I'm watching with interest.

It's worth sorting the original engine in case you need it for road tax exemption which is 4ish? years away now.

Finite,as you know I'm a stones throw from you if you need any help etc.let me know.
I'm hoping the cab feels quicker,I'm thinking of a nice exhaust too that makes a good sound
But not too silly.what does anyone recommend.lol;)

Have you got anything to lift the engine out with? Since I've got a bad back now as the song goes "machines will do the heavy work" I may buy a crane even if I sell it on afterwards.

I hire the engine lift in town for I think 15 quid a day.i would buy one but can't be bothered trying to store one as
My storage is rammed.i don't mind hire.if your gonna be ready near mid Feb to pull your engine we could do both in one
Day (if you want) it's easier with 2.although I have took em out and in on my own.

A few years back I removed head lowered block and g/box to floor jacked up car and dragged
It out with a rope caveman style.lol

But don't do things like that now as like you my back would give up.:o

That doesn't sound too bad do they come with the bar with two chains? I think it would be a bit of a struggle without that. It might be a bit too soon for me. I'm thinking about trying to get an MOT on it with the oil pressure switches swapped around as John suggested just to get it through. The rear beam bushes want doing and the front wishbones [xx(]

That's it I have a painful ongoing reminder that it's more risky as you age and any short term gain from over exertion is outweighed by loss of earnings.

It's almost 10 months now. Low oil pressure in the head. I'm fairly certain the bottom end is fine, but the head is certain to need work if its salvageable. It will no doubt need a skim as its intermittently boiled over for years.
