I have a 1996 Golf GTI VR6 AAA, it cranks fine but will not start. fuses good, new cam sensor, good crank sensor, extra ECM, good battery, and new gas pump. After doing some tests I noticed that it had 2 dead circuits that are necessary to start. ECM relay and the (FPR) fuel Pump Relay both missing the negative triggers to activate. I have scanned the engine and I have a 5 codes, 2 of the codes are the ones preventing it from starting. If I add a negative trigger to the 2 relays they will activate with no problems but will not start. BELOW I HAVE PROVIDED THE SCAN REPORT FROM VCDS ROSS-TECH...........CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE, PS: I AM NOT A MECHANIC BUT I CAN HELP MYSELF, this is just a restore project car for me. THANK YOU AND HELLO TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP I AM NEW HERE.

    Fuel pump relay.

Question is, if the fuel pump relay contacts on 30 and 87 are closed circuited (pump permanently running), will the car fire up?

Other faults are typical in MK3 cars and would mean when the vehicle does start, your ABS and Airbag lights will stay on.

    Hey Toyotec,

contacts 30 and 87 need positive and negative to run the pump, yes it will run permanently, I agree. I only did this to test if the circuit is good. To answer your question the car will only crank over but not start. I am not sure why it will not start so I am just testing to see what does not work. Fuse # 18 is dead, the fuse is dead, if powered with my probe (Power Probe4) the pump will run but that does not solve the problems. I suspect that I my need a fuse box so I have ordered a replacement from ebay (used). When this all started The car was fine, it was just being started for 20 mins to charge up the battery, at times I did have to jump it with another car to charge but it did start. Then one day it would only crank but not start. I test for gas on the front rail and I had no gas supply......tested the pump and it was bad so I installed a new pump (ebay). Then I tried to start and it did not, added a half tank of new gas and still no start. I have now begun to test all the ignition part to weed out the culprit........To date I have bought gas pump, cam sensor, ECM and a new ignition switch, I did not buy a crank sensor because it was recently replaced and seems to be working, (I hope). I do a little work on it when I can since it is cold in the garage, this GTI has been in the garage for a few years but it is always in the garage. So I am waiting to get the fuse box and all the replacement fuses since I new have the urge to restore/replace all I can afford to get it back running.......1996 to 2018.......when I get it started I be really happy.

Injectors have no power, ECM fuse no negative trigger on the relay #3, fuse #18 dead, Fuel pump relay no negative trigger relay #12 and seems to be missing ignition in the fuse box so just waiting to try a replacement fuse box. I AM CONFUSED, WHAT ELSE DOES IT NEED!!!!!

I received my replacement fuse box in great condition.....original OEM part but sadly it did the same as mine.

pin (Z1) I think my diagram is the supply for the injectors has no out put, fuse #18 has no power with ignition on, the fuse is good.

Z/1 is fed from the fuel relay as is fuse 18 so if its not being triggered by the ecu then neither will get power, for testing purposes as Toyotec said you can loop the 2 terminals on the fusebox with a bit of wire for the 30 and 87 to bypass the relay, or another thing you can do is swap the 18 relay into slot 12. You could also use an earlier 17 relay or mk4 era 100 relay, this way fuel pump, G1/8, G2/8 and Z/1 will be live all the time ignition is on.

if it still doesn't fire jumped like this and all the pump relay power points mentioned above are live when jumped as well you can rule out the fuel relay and fusebox fuel pump section at least, looking at my US diagrams it looks like your ECU has an ignition trigger from G2/4 which is fed by fuse 15 so thats worth a check. As its an OBD2 ECU you dont need the 109 relay in slot 3 either so you can get rid of that one.

since you have vagcom plug it back in and go into the ECU measuring blocks, find the engine rpm block and see fi it goes up while cranking over, if it doesnt then your crank sensor is bad or the wiring to it

edit: actually since you can scan it with vagcom the ignition trigger must be ok at least, so you can skip that check...

In a fairly modern car as a MK3, it is unlikely to have a fuse box issue or have concerns with the electrics, unless it has been previously tampered with and left in a mess.
That has been my experience with working on vehicles over a few decades.

Having owned a EU/UK Spec MK3 Golf VR6, I can say I never had an electrical problem like that what so ever.

It is likely as the fuel pump relay (J17) is not working or giving any output from KL87, you are unlikely to have the MAF, Lambda sensor heater, purge solenoid (not shown) , fuel pump and injectors working.

That is a lot of systems to suddenly go down.

This does suggest the ECU driver for the f/p relay is not being pulled low for some logical reason.

I have found it is usually some error that causes problems like these, so I have to ask what was the history of the vehicle leading up to this problem?

I have included the current flow diagrams from the ABV/AAA EU2 VR6 12v engines with a M3.8.1 controller - 021906256. This is very similar to the post 95 controllers M5.9 021906259 parts you have in the North American market.

Hey toyotec, I also appreciate you feedback on this issue.....thank you for the diagrams.

I think I bought it in 99, It was a repairable that I had a shop fix it up for me in NY, all was good, drove it with no problems for over 13 yrs then I parked it since I had another car for a few years then it wold not start. tested it and the gas in the tank messed up the pump, so replaced it (pump) and all was good but still was not driving it just stating it up once or twice a month. So the batter was completely dead so I had to jump it.......(did it a few times and no problem), ten the last time I would not start so I tracked it down to be the pump so I replaced it thinking It would just start but it did not and that is were we are at now. So I have replaced and confirmed working quiet a few parts........It has always been a good car so I am not sure why the fuel pump keep messing up I suspect ebay aftermarket cheap pumps ($50) an original is about $200......and yes the old gas did thicken and mess up the original so I drained and thoroughly cleaned the tank and put in fresh new gas. You can also read my reply above to robjonny to get some more history and my next approach on trying to solve the issue. I am looking for better detailed wiring diagrams and I am also a tutorial on VCDS to help me with this problem...... I will keep you updated in a few when I clean some connectors, ground points, and test some connections.

Hey robjonny, thank you for replying to my post, yes the VR6 is still down and on life support and I need all the help I can get to resuscitate my baby. Anyway, Just waiting to go in the garage to apply your suggestions but it is a bit cold here in Florida......will do very soon, I do have a few things to do in there, clean up all the connectors with a toothbrush and electrical contact cleaner and all the ground points under the battery, I also have tho clean up all the plugs. I all fails the I will be looking to get that Crank Position Sensor, so I will follow your instructions and keep you informed on my situation.......Is It possible you could tell me how to use VCDS to track the problem? Thank you again, I will update you soon robjonny. Thank you again.

Sure no problem, once you open the software click the top left button for Select control module, then click 01-Engine. once you're logged into the ECU you can click into Fault codes 02 to display just the codes on the ECU, below it is the Meas. Blocks 08 which I mentioned. once in there you can click through to see all your ecu sensor inputs in real time, which is very useful. Engine speed or RPM is the one which tells you what signal if any the ECU is getting from the crank sensor :)

Update, I have now replaced cam, coil pack (I had an extra one), fuse panel, all new fuses (all of them, including those under the hood), un-pluged and cleaned (with electrical contact cleaner) most of the plugs under the hood. I removed the battery and plate below to get to the ground posts, wire brushed them and cleaned the area with the electrical contact cleaner, ECM (my ECM) and connector as well. Battery has a full charge 12.7v, removed all spark plugs and cleaned them and put them back in the engine, torqued them down to specs 18 ft lbs as my manual said.

Tried to start it up but it failed, cranked as normal but no start. All the normal dash lights were present. I have gas at the top fuel rail, I have spark, and I see the tach level moving in the dash. i tried about 4 time, I think I heard a sputter but it only happened once. That was it for me for the day, I will be on it again tomorrow with my test probe to verify some signals......I have another ignition switch I will install just to eliminate that possibility (since I have it, new).........but yea, the fuel rail seemed good, it had pressure and gas was present. I will also scan the engine again with VCDS.

sounds like we're going in the right direction, I take it fuel pump is now running while the engine is cranking over and you have power at Z/1, g1/8 etc?

was the fuel filter ever done, if the fuel inside the tank went bad the stuff in the lines/rail probably isnt much better. worth pulling the fuel rail out and drop each injector into an equally sized container, crank it and see if you get fuel. friend of mine did a 24v swap and found all 6 injectors were bad, if nothing its probably worth pulling the rail off completly and strip injectors off for a good clean. point the feed pipe into a bucket and crank it to blow out any old fuel left in the lines and work from there

I am still looking for answers on my GTI, my mechanic friend in NY told me to do a compression test on it but I don't have the tool......he did say I could put a cap of tranny oil in each cylinder to test so that is one road to explore. The other one is based on a video I watched that does hold a great deal of validity due to the age and miles on my GTI.........(slipped Timing chain).......I have never done that job on it, compression....possible, I just have to get a tool. I want to get a cheap usb scope to take a better look. I am a bit shocked that, (1) I started it a few weeks prior to all this, (2) it sounds the same as usual on cranking....... (3) I an not sure on the crank sensor, the most likely to cause this problem!!!!!! I do have tach movement on cranking and I did use a ohm meter to test the CPS. I will up date this feed when I do some more test.....Thank you again rubjonny.......what do you think?

Pull a spark plug after cranking, is it wet with fuel?

    Spark
    Fuel
    Compression
    Timing

If you have all the above the engine should run, what's missing?

Hey Dax!, the plugs seem fine....I agree that the engine should start with all that. It never really had a problem, it has always been parked in the garage and only started to charge the batt, then tried to start it up one day and it only cranked, normal crank. Read through all my posts to get my story/history on this history.....I am not giving up on it....waiting to get a usb scope to see if that will give me some direction......I need to test compression and some way to look if the timing chain jumped. I will update as soon as I get some more test tools.

Hey rubjonny, I am still on this project, my cousin in NY told me to try removing all the plugs, unplug the coil, unplug the fuel relay and remove the up stream O2 sensor. So I did all that to blow all the excessive gas out the system and to free up the cat conveter, I also made a short video and this is the link, https://youtu.be/yjLeoVybkCQ. I have another video to post to show when I put them all back in, showing I am getting spark but did not start........He did tell me to get a can of starting fluid for my next test. I have a new scan report below........I am really thinking this needs A FUEL PUMP RELAY SO I WILL ORDER ONE ASAP OEM. PS: since I got spark does that mean my Crank Position Sensor is good?

ok let us know how you get on. if you suspect the fuel relay either bridge the socket as eddie said earlier or swap the 18 relay into slot 12. if the car still wont start like this then its not the fuel relay
