Today, 'I ar' been mainly making a 'Lathe''. The two machine vices, I made as an apprentice, at Laycocks, in 1966. The chuck is from a 45 years old 'WOLF' drill. The bench grinder is about 40 years old. The block of wood, 'bed frame', is 12" x 8" Douglas Fir. Just need to make a tool post, and turning tool!
Turns out, by luck, that B & D, are so cheap and nasty, that they used a 3/8" thread on the grinder shaft!
Ta so J. I was intending to make some out of HSS drill bits. Would quite fancy a small triangular tipped Carbide tool. Must be a removable tip though, as I don't have a 'green' wheel. I have not set up, or used a lathe, for about 40 years! Last time was when I used to set up the J Type Overdrive annulus line at Laycocks. I did it for about six months. I still need to get a 240V speed controller sorted out!
With a bit of searching... 1.1A, couldn't quite see it in the photo. Variable speed - http://www.screwfix.com/prods/25673/Electrical-Supplies/Switches-Sockets/White-Moulded/Volex-Range/Volex-1G-2W-400W-Dimmer-Switch Most Volex appears to be Crabtree switchgear anyway
Ta so Aidan. 1.1 Amp. It stalls out with the least bit of load on the grinding wheel. I flipping well never thought of a dimmer switch! Thank you so much! ps. Screwfix won't deliver to Eire. But, I can soon find a dimmer somewhere around. pps. Volex may be owned by Crabtree. But, I can tell you, from years of experience, that it is not as good. That it why it is so much cheaper!
Looks naff from the front I will agree, but the dimmer switchgear has crabtree written on it! Maybe they come straight from the rejection pile!
OK Aidan. Thanks for the heads-up. I will look at the back of any dimmers that I find! Once upon a time, I only used Crabtree. These days I only use MK. Can't find Crabtree easily in Eire! ps. Once upon a time, when I had cash, I employed an Electrician to re-wire my 400 years old cottage in Derbys. The wiring was lead cased it was so old. He fitted Volex, even though I had written a spec. stating that only Crabtree should be used. I did not pay him 'til he had changed everything to Crabtree!
I made a turning tool from an HSS drill bit today. Burnt out very quickly. Oilite only recommend Carbide or Diamond. Mushy. Have you got a Diamond tool you don't need? 0.1mm/0.2mm tip rad!
Sort of. I have a Lidl pillar drill thingy, that you fasten a normal drill into. The bracket for the drill has broken. I also have a 20,000 rpm router head, the base of which has broken. Add the two together + the two-vice traverse system = milling machine. Great minds think alike!
Dave, Im Impressed. I should let you know that I have a spare http://www.lathes.co.uk/raglan/page14.html In good shape missing a tool post and tail stock, Id value it at around 100-150euro, if you have anything you would consider trading its yours. I have two other lathes, Bridget, and just two hands.
I will accept a small commission from you if everything goes to plan with your deal with daved. How about you "cast" me the perfect woman? At least she will be hot for a certain length of time.
