Mk 2 old race car Gearbox Redone dodgy bushes on gear change but what can I do to make it better without costing hundreds ? Maybe a setup where I can raise the tower as it's track only? Ideas please thanks
Cable change ? Is so, I raised mine with some this tube. Old photos, but the ones that show it clearest. Puts the lever very nicely to hand
I've got one of those bucket seats but had to take it out as hips wouldn't fit in it ! I'm not that fat just big boned and 6'3" lol How easy to do a cable change set up ? It's of a mk3 right ? Still getting into the hop ups as just got mk 2 s here x4 getting sooo much stick of family I think I might have a bit of an addictive personality once I get into something I always get carried away hence 4 mk2 gti s + engines etc etc etc lol. I'll have to sell my twin 40's manifold and polished head , 2 ltr block on here when I get approved ?
I got a pair of old Subaru buckets to go in much more comfortable Should sell old bucket seat as well. 4 branch for 8 v etc etc etc lol
Being a 2Y-coded gearbox, this is a rod change gearbox, so the cable shifter does not work with it. A simple solution would be to lengthen the gearstick, seen in this works-prepared Mk1 Golf rally car: - with appropriate leverage adjustment at the linkage end to shorten the throw
As per CE`s the post above ^ it appears yours is a rod-change box. I`m not up on all the codes lol If you have a good box, with LSD, I really wouldn`t look to swap just to lift the gearlever. The shift isn`t as good unless you change some parts. My setup is now pretty good, but the Rod change box like you have feels very precise out of the box Don`t race, just do loads of trackdays
Don`t race, just do loads of trackdays [/QUOTE] Minted eh lol yes thanks for tips you and Chris are very helpful really appreciate all you help I'm hoping to get away with 3-5 track days a year if allowed lol
Here are a couple of modified linkages to give some idea of what you can do with them. They're Mk1 fitment, but the principles are the same as Mk2. This one uses the well-recognised ball and socket and are generally available on eBay, and with weighted shifters also: This one is from the Reeves Mk1 originally, later used in my Mk1 Jetta. It uses rose joints rather than ball and sockets, and has the shifter weight on it (thick rod) to ease shifting through inertia: To alter the shifter movement, there is adjustment in the bottom right of the picture: the vertical part which attaches to the shift rod is double drilled to allow two leverage settings. Also the lever on the left hand side of the picture can have the attachment point altered to adjust movement
If I was minted, I`d go racing lol There is a lot of help available on the forum, not only are we a great source of resource, but we`re making great strides into promoting a healthy offline scene, in regional meets, shows and driving events
Do you and Chris go to the Manchester meet trying to see if my girls will let me go this month or they can come for some food while I be a sadolol
Regarding linkages, Hotgolf on here did a brilliant kit that I have fitted to my car, which also runs a rod change box. This stuff This is not a your regular ebay job but is made out of Stainless Steel and the weighted part is turn by hand by Hotgolf himself. The relay shaft bush is now out of brass as is the bush on the gearbox bracket. The box was refurbed by Hotgolf. I can say I have owned and driven over 50 Mk2s 8v and 16vs and this is the best rod change gearbox I have ever driven with these mods. Proper direct in feel!
Can make a weighted link like that easy but 2&3 pics looks a bit more difficult will need some time to study that
Sorry to resurrect a thread but I desperately want a new linkage for my Mk2 and noticed this one! Any idea where I can get one please? :-)
Hotgolf on here has now set up a full time company , Gas N Gears he’s based in South Wales . He’s got a page on Facebook
