If other folk still wish to make the trip feel free to get in contact via the emails stated previously.

Has anyone else booked a ferry crossing yet? What times etc. is anyone considering Dunkirk instead to save 23 miles travel?

Guys, hpr touched on the winter tyres Subject previously. I believe that the German cops do indeed pick on tourists regarding winter tyres. I've heard stories of spot checks and fines being issued on the spot for not having them fitted. Plus I believe it's actually date associated rather than weather. Poland and Austria are the same.

It is mandatory to have winter tyres, if it snowing, or the roads have ice on them. If you drive during these conditions and get pulled, the fine is 40 quid. If you cause an accident in such conditions and do not have the winter tyres fitted, the fine doubles. There is no date range for that rule, however locals tend to have them fitted from October to Easter. The Polizei are also known to target UK drivers, who are likely not to have winters fitted.

So. Without winter tyres we are likely screwed?

Id rather pay 40 fine than buy another set of tyres

    All,

After many calls and emails to the hotels, factories and people, 7 of us will be making this trip in the first week of March.

Despite our delays, HPR has managed to book us visits to the Wolfsburg factory, Salzgitter as well as getting the hotel arranged for our stay.

Many thanks for the support and to Hugo

This is the proposed timetable for the trip which is right around the corner.

    Time Table
    Date Day Proposed Place Time
3 Tuesday Travel to Gifhorn All day
    3 Tuesday Gifhorn Hotel 18:00-19:00
    4 Wednesday Autostadt/Zeit Haus/Towers 10:00
4 Wednesday Salzgitter English Factory tour 13:00
    4 Wednesday Autostadt/Zeit Haus/Museum 15:00
    4 Wednesday Gifhorn Hotel 18:00
    5 Thursday Autostadt/Zeit Haus/Towers 10:30
5 Thursday WoB English Factory Tour 12:00
    5 Thursday Autostadt/VW Classic/Museum 13:30
    5 Thursday Gifhorn Hotel 18:00
6 Friday travel time Travel to home All day
I would also suggest to start booking your crossings ASAP.

Any suggestions please feel free to post them up.

On a personal note, I thought about consuming the miles of this trip, wafting along in Audiness.
But that was done before so instead I am going to do this the hard way...

    ......literally!

I will be taking JENVEE, my Golf MK2 GTI, back to the place of its birth some 23 years ago. Now faster, lower, much more nimble and 62bhp more powerful than when it left the end of line. If only my car could talk :)

I am looking forward to this visit which I believe will be epic!

Countdown is running....in exact 21 days from now ... we are on our way from the hotel towards Autostadt ...

Please book your Ferry or Eurotunnel crossing as the longer you wait, the more pricey it becomes...

Excellent very happy to see this
So ferry / tunnel booking , would it make more sense for us all to book the same one and go in a convoy
Or meet at some point in france perhaps

Let me know which you book Tris.

    I'm thinking

Dover -> Dunkirk via DFDS at 8am
Dunkirk -> Dover via DFDS return at 6pm or 8pm

Just going to look at tunnel prices. Although I'd rather relax for an hour or so with a cooked breakfast on ferry.

Tunnel is 58 each way. So is rather save the cash and go via ferry.

As its good a 700 km drive from Calais towards Wolfsburg i would prefer that all arrive at the hotel before 6 or 7 PM and we have a meal there at 8PM

Driving in group over a long distance is imo not really practical, but maybe a few stops on the road might be an option...
