Looks like a long FWD type manifold...great throttle linkage!...would be interesting to see inside.

Not the ones I've seen - I have a friend with a Ralt VW F3 car which has a Judd/Brabham engine - 1600 type block and heron head but a 2.0. The 2.0 lump is a bored and stroked 1.6, not a 1.8 block.

Could well have had the head added at a later date. Looking at the oil drains on the front of the head, compared to the block, I *think* that's a Mk1 1600 type block. What's cast into the back of it?

So, if it's had a later head, it must have had the pistons changed as well, to get the CR right after the change to a chambered head.

F3 Engine... too many bits in the way to see the block clearly, but you can see it's a 1.6 GTI type head - from the position of the water outlet. Note there's only one oil drain at the front.

I can't see it being a FVee motor as they were unrestricted and you would want a short stroke for revs [power] (I think the 1600's were shorter stroke than the 1800's) and sleeving the bore size to get down to 1600 would really limit valve size and cause shrouding, it's tight enough when they are std! Maybe an F3 motor as the best used a long stroke to get torque as they didn't rev, so that would make sense but it would be minimum 1800, more likely 1900+.

I'm not saying it's not a proper race engine just that it seems like a development possibly using parts from a few different builders for a specific application, interesting too see what. As I said be good to see under the rocker cover and down the ports but really you need to see the pistons as well.

Thanks for the comments, you obviously know more about the VW engine than I do, I being a confirmed Ford man. I may well take the lid off and take some pictures for the experts on the forum to judge. I really do need to find out exactly what it is and make a decision as to what to do with it.....

    1600 Mk1 lump is 79.5mm bore and 80mm stroke.

    1800 is 81 x 86.4

This one seems to have an extremely small oil capacity...

    They're normally dry-sumpted, IIRC.
