Help needed in wiring up my ABF on carbs.

I have searched and searched and read so many posts it's actually made me more confused.

I was running full ABF set up ecu etc etc and decided to go over to carbs (solex 40s) they are on and ready to be wired up.

I have removed all of the original ABF loom ecu etc but am struggling with the loom bits for the carbs.

I've been told by a friend that I need a KR loom, ecu, tci, dizzy etc.

So I've been given all the above.

The only bit I can figure out on the loom is the plug that goes to the dizzy and one to the water temp sensor on the head. The rest is a mystery to me.

Some pics.......

Fuel pump I'll be using.

Any help on this would be amazing as I'm not to good with the wiring side of things. And would love to get this caddy up and running this summer as it's been off the road for 8 months now.

Thanks for looking.

The ECU you were given is from an 8v GTI for a start.

You need to source a 16v ignition ECU.

Damn it.

No wonder I can't figure it out.

I'm guessing I need all what I've got but for a 16v.
None of the above will work with it.

Or do I just need a 16v ecu?

You need the ignition unit from a MK2 KR engine ideally.

Just that with the matching loom and then we can proceed to help.

pre/post 90 makes no difference to you. can also use corrado kr stuff, only difference is the ignition live for ecu is on the 3 or 4 pin plug near the ecu rather than taken from the coil live as per mk2 kr so have to run a live here or just tap it to the coil same as mk2.

1 - Earth to battery -ve
2 - KR ign controller plug
3 - TCI-H plug
4 - Black - KR ign controller & TCI-H ign live - terminal 15 side of coil
5 - Green - Coil trigger - terminal 1 side of coil
\- red/black - spade is for the isv control unit, the main wire is the rev counter feed
6 - Brown - Earth to cylinder head
7 - Blue/white - Temp sensor feed (use one of the 3 on the side of the head)
8 - Dizzy plug
9 - red/yellow - Fuel pump relay earth trigger
|- black/yellow - idle switch feed (12v feed with throttle shut)
\- black/white - ignition live for ECU (only on Corrado ECU loom)

In terms of electrical connections any can work and John has illustrated the connection points in the picture above.
Mechanically, find a way to merge the vacuum signals for ECU load sensing. it would give some map resolution between 65 to 100 kPa
In terms of ignition mapping between ECUs, my experience favours the pre 90 spec but I do not have any other than subjective observations from tuning the systems fitted to various engines.

So the correct parts have arrived.

All seems to match your picture above.
Although i seem to be missing the ISV and rev counter wire. Going to carbs cancels out the ISV and I have no rev counter so that should be ok?

Where does this one go ?

In simple terms as I'm not to good at this wiring stuff.

Red/yellow fuel pump earth trigger
Black/yellow ecu ignition live.

Oh and there is also a small vacuum pipe coming out of the ecu do I need to do something with this?

Thanks in advance. Simon.

the 2 pin plug is the fuel relay trigger and idle switch, its plug 9 in my picture (yours is CE2 with 'packard timer' plug, my pic is CE1 with a 2 pin spade plug)

plug 5 in my diagram has a bit of the car side cut off, this is the red/black wire. you dont need this on the ecu loom, you would keep the one on your car loom :) the one you need is the green wire to the coil negative, pop that into the double spade with the original red/black from fusebox. you'll see what I mean!

post #8 covers the vacuum pipe :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Ok so I need a red and black from fuse box.
Mines been messed around with and I don't seem to have a red and black coming into the engine bay except for one to the starter motor.

Where would the red and black one I need be coming out of the back of the fuse box?

On the top of the manifold there are 4 black rubber bungs, could I use one of these for the vacuum ecu?

[IMG][/IMG]

I'm still confused about where to put the yellow/red and black/yellow?

it should be hanging out with the black live feed from the coil around the back somewhere? make sure your coil live wire is black too, if its purple/white you need to chop that out and run a fresh wire from fusebox.

Its pin d/23 for the fusebox live feed to coil, and d/26 is the red/black for the rev counter

you dont need to worry about the 2 pin plug, the black/yellow is only needed for the kjet injection. you could use the red/yellow to trigger your fuel pump relay if you like, its an earth trigger. or you could use a kjet relay without rev limiter inside instead. you dont want an ignition switched relay/pump ideally as it wont cut out if you crash

You can join them up and run the common end to the ECU yes.
