Okay, this could be a long shot here, but here we go anyway.

Wife has a 2002 (52) 1.4 Petrol Audi A2 which i believe is an AUA motor with 75hp!!

Its slow - very slow. Despite a recent service and clean bill of health from local VAG Specialist.

I have read about swapping Inlet Mnaifolds and even Cams on 1.4 16v Polos/Lupos but they all mention throttle cable - this has DBW.

Can anyone shed any light on any 'off the shelf' bits from VAG group that will assit this thing and make it move better?

Full engine swaps are out of the equasion - wife won't allow me to play that much with it!!!

    Thanks in advance. Nathan

so 101 views but no responces.
i guess nobody on here touches the small 16v blocks.

a quick scan on ebay at inlet manifolds found the following:

    036 129 711 BJ - listed as polo 6n2 1.6 16v gti (no code) - this is alloy
    036 129 711 DN - listed a lupo 1.4 16v (BBY) - this is plastic
    036 129 711 BL - listed a polo 6n2 1.4 16v (AHW) - this is plastic
    036 129 711 BE - listed as Golf Seat Lup 200 1.4 16v - (no code) - this is plastic

they look to same shape to my eyes but the throttle body light fit differently.

Is it a case of suck it and see?

    Hi Natedogg,

in 2011 i tuned my golf mk4 with 1.4 16v BCA engine. It's similar to the AUA engine and also has drive by wire throttlebody.
I changed the intake mainfold and throttlebody to bigger ones and got 101-103hp out of the stock engine. I made two dyno runs on different dynos to confirm the power gains.

    I installed a lupo 1.4 16v AFH intake mainfold (036129711Q) and a renault megane throttle body (408238827002)

The best choise for the intake mainfold will be the polo 6n gti (036129711BJ) as you mentioned before. It's the biggest you can get as a stock part and it's made in one piece.
The renault throttlebody is cheaper to get and has a bigger bore than the 1.6 16v BCB vw throttlebody. Both are made by VDO and are fitting the mainfolds plug and play.

I also deleted the EGR pipe and reconnected the crankcase ventilation before the throttlebody.

    sone pics:

    X-Man,

Thanks for the above - most helpful.
Is the number in brackets the part number for the renault throttle body?
Also did stock 1.4 injuectors and ECU cope or did you make changes there too?

Yes, the nummer in brackets in the Renault part nummer. You can see the nummer in the close up picture of the throttlebody.
The 1.4 injectors work very well. I also used them with E85. But didn't check the duty cycle.
But you can use the 1.6 injectors from 1.6 golf BCB engine aswell. I tested them too.

The best is that after you modify these things the engine will rev like hell;)

PS: I drive my mk4 since 2010. Since 2011 modified. Still running good.

X-man Did the manifold and throttlebody increase power at low revs 2000-3000 rpm or only at higher revs about 4k+? When you feel the difference compared with stock mani and TB?

    Sorry 4 my english :)

The main power increase is above 4500rpm. The engine is more revhappy up to 7000rpm, if your rev limit is set there.

another dyno diagramm made at oschersleben raceway 2012:

Polo Gti exhaust manifold is an improvement as well. There is few things you can do to it.

Hello from Greece! I have a polo 9n 1.4 bby 75hp. My setup is going to be 1.4 aub head, 1.6 pistons rods and crank, 1.4 aub intake manifold, 1.4 aub throttle body, 1.4 aub injectors, bmc cda airbox, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and 55mm exhaust pipe. Stock ecu will be flashed from a local tuner.

Anybody know if there is any other aftermarket cams other than dbilas? I've seen in previous posts of X-man that there is a throttle body from renault, I will try to find one and test it.

Also X-MAN could you give some advice about the last photos you uploaded? What is the modification you are doing on the camshaft cover?
    Thanks!

Great read here I'm definitely looking to do the same thing just wondering if I only change the manifold and throttle body would the standard ecu be ok?

I'm pretty sure it's fine, could probably use a remap if you change the injectors as well though.

Which throttle body from VAG would be plug and play with 036129711BJ? Need to be DBW, obviously.

Did you run the 1.6 injectors without a remap?

    Hi all!

Although this is a pretty old thread. I stumbled upon it and tried to do the same on my Lupo 1.4 16v BBY 2002.
Got pretty far until i tried starting the engine. It started but ran really rough and died within 10 seconds. Afterwards my fuelpump wouldn't come alive.

After resetting all the learned values, and relearning the throttle body (the renault one as described above), the same thing happens.
Apparently my Magneti Marelli 4MV cannot cope with any other throttle body than the standard one...

The Bosch ecu (part nr: 0 261 207 190) doesn't have this problem. But the pinouts of both ECU's are totally different (according to my remapping specialist).
So i'm in a bit of a pickle. The engine now runs too lean, so replacing the intake manifold and removing the EGR does increase the amount of air going into the engine quite a bit. But remapping it now won't give me as much gain as i would like.

I've come up with a possible solution, but it's work in progress. I'll post any updates.
The idea is to change out the potentiometer from the old to the new throttle body.

If anyone out there has any suggestions, i'm all ears!

    @nickid
in my case there are two vacuum pipes in the inlet manifold. (polo 6n gti 036129711BJ)
One is a direct fit for the EVAP (gas tank fuel vapor removal).
The other one goes to both the brake booster and the carter ventilation system (on the back side of the engine).
The valve cover breather goes to the intake pipe before the throttle body.

    Thank you.

I ran mine with the cast inlet manifold, polo gti throttle and injectors without map to see how it ran. It ran great but got a code for egr.

I have changed following parts on my BBY engine in my Audi A2.
Intake and EGR pipe from an BBZ engine and Renault throttle body.

    Intake 036129711FD

    Renault Throttle body 408238827002

    EGR intake pipe 036131521BF

It works very good and I will remap the ecu this spring.
