Can anyone tell me if there are part numbers or any identifiers on spark plugs so I know which to buy? I’m also looking to replace the spark plug wires and oil filter after accidentally taking the car swimming! My mk2 had an engine swap and I haven’t found out which engine it has yet. I know it’s a 1.8 GTI DOHC and it’s got KJET injection. Any help would be appreciated.
14mm if I'm not mistaken and if you're purchasing one, make sure it's a decent type and not those ones where the rubber seal starts departing the socket - that is an absolutre pain in the nads
Absolute - sorry fingers faster than my old brain I believe the Bosch model of spark plug is on the link below - I only ever used Bosch and only ever the triple prong plug on my old 16V (never let me down) https://www.gsparkplug.com/1x-bosch-special-spark-plug-fr56.html
16mm it is - I should have copped that - I think the diameter is 14mm which is bugger all use to anyone, sorry about that.
I normally buy my service parts from mister auto.ie and they haven't let me down, the shipping costs for VW Heritage coupled with the currency change does not make it easy for me unless it's a special/rare part that I can only get from them. Bosch, Beru, Champion or NGK - if they have any of those you should be good, Bosch is just a personal thing for me.
I use NGK . Just cos Bosch are known to be rubbish in a mk5 gti. And yes, I know that's irrelevant to the mk2!
Another vote for NGK. Assuming the engine is a 1.8 16v from a mk2 then it's BCP7ET part number 2078 for KR engine code. Don't always go by what plugs come out of the engine as the previous owner could have installed the wrong ones! Best to confirm what engine you have first.
I’ve used all sorts in my cars, NGK, Bosch, Beru Etc can’t tell the difference personally. They all run fine. I’m sure when you start going big power or whatever, then sure.
as above any decent make will be ok so long as you get the correct spec for your car. I normally use Beru since thats what my usual supplier has in stock: http://www.vwspares.co.uk
I did not know that Bosch plugs were mot good in the Mk5 GTI - good to know, I'm half thinking of buying a Mk5 in the summer, if I can get a nice original one, not easy over here as they mod the s$$t out of them
The issue i have is that I have no idea what engine I have in my mk2. I know it’s obviously a 16v but I’m not sure what engine code it is or if it’s even from a golf. I took it to a mechanic to take a look and the first thing he said when the bonnet was opened was “ooh that’s a Corrado engine”. So it could even be a 2.0. Does anyone have any idea how I can figure out what engine I have? Thanks
Look on the back of the engine block - a big 1.8 or 2.0 should be cast into the block. The engine number should also be stamped on a flat machined section at the front of the block - starts with KR for 1.8, 9A (or 6A, ACE) for a 16v. This thread shows the 1.8 (but same for 2.0) https://www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/where-is-the-engine-code-on-my-1991-mk2-16v.276609/
post up a picture of the engine bay then we can ID what kjet system it is running exactly, then you just need to check for the big 1.8 or 2.0 on the back. if its a 2.0 there are a few codes but it makes no difference on the plug front at least
