A good mate has asked me for help, converting his 16v from twin Webers and a mk2 16v spark ecu, to Standalone management and throttle bodies. The ECU we're looking at (one I've experience with) will happily do EDIS style or COP sparks. He likes the neatness of COP. Are there any coils that fit reasonably well to 16v rocker covers? We can get stuff machined relatively easily if necessary, and we're not just looking to run scene-tastic R8 ones I'd happily use something from any brand.
You have to machine the cam cover for decent COP. TFSI/R8 are the most common and also very robust. Alternatively, you just fire to a Ford Sigma TiVCT style coil pack, which uses standard 16v plug leads. That is what I use on JENVEE.
Yeah I know about the machining for R8 sized ones, just thought by now someone would have figured out a longer, and/or slimmer one that would work with an adaptor, like guys putting 2.0 ones on a 18.t. I'm happy enough with the EDIS style, that's what I use myself, but obviously it suits my Ford application perfectly
Some rover k series had coil on lead from memory, unfortunately our mgf is an early one so is normal tyres so can't reference, but on my mini I used edis, and did manage quite a neat installation I think, tucked under servo.
The 2.0T ones are the same dimensions as the R8 red ones and also fit in the 1.8T. So you would have to machine those to fit the cam cover of a EA827 16v also. EDIS coil pack is completey different for the plug leads and not a coil pack I use. As said, Sigma 1.25 to 1.6 4 pole coil pack as well as 2.0 Duratec coil pack from the Fiesta ST. Those all work with EA827 16v leads.
View attachment 31529 These are what Ed's on about. The earlier EDIS ones have bigger terminals for the plug leads right? Earlier one looks like this as fitted to Old Escorts etc. https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ridex/805...XkDE294sEgTBYZEsyBVaERNS09aI7YfUaApIAEALw_wcB
Yeah I have both types here, from various donor engines . I just always thought all those FORD wasted spark units were EDIS
Until the blower threw a bearing! Inlet tract from carb used to ice up and the fuel would pool in it. It was a 998, and quite nippy, took supercharger off and went back to n/a carb, but with megajolt it was the best running A series I ever have had, and it was cammed. Had a similar set up on a minor, 1275 but a nice short carb to supercharger tract, ran a modified metro turbo dizzy with that.
EDIS inplies a Ford Electronic Distributorless Ignition System and control module and not just the coil. The coil for an EDIS is not compatible with VW 16v plug leads. Typical EDIS coil packs look like these. The coil pack I am suggesting is from the 2007 onwards Sigma 1.6 TiVCT engine, like this one I shared years ago on JENVEE. I still run that coil pack to this day. It is a Bosch coil pack found on later cars, like the Focus C307 and Fiesta B299 with a small 3 pin connector.
They are the same 3 pin arrangement as the older Sigma/Zetec coil packs. They are also very reliable.
Was a stage during the mk1 Focus/ Fiesta era where the coil packs would suffer from cracking , but they seemed to sort them out in the later mk2 Focus era.
