Cool could you send the photos my way, as I'm half way through a complete gear linkage FAQ I just need pics of the housing process :)
Handy that the lever will drop out, didn't know that!

Basically when its done the gearstick shouldn't move upwards AT ALL it should be completly solid. Before mine had a big hole in the bottom of it and about 1cm up/down play [:s]

    Hi RJ
Just had gear linkage bush replacement kit delivered. Been reading through these posts with interest.
Did you say you had made a step by step guide ?
If so would you mind sharing.
I’m going to replace and regrease what bushes I can. There’s only one orange bush in the kit I got but I see two at ends of shift rod. Maybe only one will need replaced.
Noticed last weekend that I’d lost the ball on the relay lever and now a lot of forward and back play. Hadn’t crossed my mind to redo all the bushes until I discovered the relay ball missing. Car has 120k do you think it would make a noticeable difference if some or all buses were replaced. finally is the weighted shift link worth fitting?

the orange bush at the shift box end comes complete with the big rubber housing it sits in, surprisingly can still get this one from VW and if you plan to replace I strongly recommend you get it from them. Its a total pain in the ass to change so you'll never want to do it again in your cars lifetime  shifter box has to come off the car so its exhaust off job, pull the rod out then push old bush out and push new one in. 191711190B at £20+VAT

When RJ says "it's a pain in the ass" then mentally you can expect...

mainly it depends how much of a git your exhaust is to remove

  10. Being a chav scorpion oval exhaust sections welded together (heavy) a bit of a faff. Not my idea!
