Hello all I have a diff bolt kit etc on its way for my mk2 16v spare gearbox. Going to have a bash at home in the shed at fitting it. Do I need any special tools to get to the diff?, can I slide hammer the driveshaft flanges off? (after removing the circlips or whatever locks them to gearbox)?. Would be interested to here anyone who's done it at home tools wise etc. Cheers all, Keith.
stripping down isnt particularly difficult, no special tools needed. flanges should just pop off once circlips removed but if they're stuck use 2x bolts threaded thru the flange holes onto wood to push them off same as you would an early 02a flange. the specialist bits come in when you want to put it back together, really while you've got it apart you want a full set of bearings, and with that you'll need to check preloads, plus one of the bearign races is fiddly and needs a thin internal puller so you can get it out to set shim thickness etc. I'd recommend you just get mr hotgolf/martin emment/gas n gears on it then it'll be sorted good and proper
Hello Rubjonny, ideally I'd like a decent diff in one of my 'boxes eventually. This ones just to get the car moving after 10+years of abandonment and thought I'd do the diff bolts just as insurance. It's up and running but a LOT of work to go..

Hello again!. I have the kit now and a couple of questions, whats the normal torque for these bolts and do they just rely on toque + thread lock to stay in place?. Is it worth staking them with a centrepunch after fitting for belt and braces?. I've had 3 weekends of fencing (40 4" posts installed) so treating myself to a day off tinkering tomorrow!. Also forgot the the Three Bond sealer from work, is the paper gasket good enough without sealant as well (might nip in for it anyway). Cheers all.
its 70nm/52lbft for the nuts, the gasket should be alright on its own but a wee bit of sealnt cant hurt
