Not sure if it's OEM but I like the look of the exhaust pipe on my 87 driver. Sadly it's starting to rot away and will need replacing soon.

Can't find anything useful looking up "191 119 E' on the internets - any suggestions?

I think there are digits missing from that number, normally 9 numbers?

Bear with me, got this number from Heritage for a mk2 petrol 191-253-609/BM which proves my post about 9 numbers.

Just got to find one with the down turned pipe!

This is something I always struggle with! What I do know is - it's a 1.8 carb engine with auto box - and this is what is on the front of the head:

Thanks for helping with this - agreed that it looks like we're missing some digits re: part number.

Thats the head casting number, the number should be 2 letters found on the flat machined part of the block, or on the sticker in the boot.

    GU then.

Problem is even if we find the correct VW part number it will no doubt be NLA.
So that will mean finding a patter part from Walker/Bosal etc

Update! I found a similar enough silencer on Autodoc:

    • IZAWIT 23.018 Rear silencer for VW Golf II Hatchback (19E, 1G1) Rear
      Article number: 23.018
    • Cost £50.68 including postage to UK

Sadly it arrived with a slight modification presumably acquired in transit but was easy enough to bash back into shape.

Quality is OK on first inspection - has had some silver paint applied I guess to cover welds - and shape is pretty close to the original VW one.

Finally got the old one off with the expected amount of persuasion. It was definitely on there!

New one went on easily. Before and after comparison below:

It's hanging a bit low but apart from that seems good. Hope that helps anybody looking for a similar box.

Unfortunately the new part would not last a fraction of the time the genuine part lasted for ! You be lucky if you get 2/3 years out of it !

Yeah I was thinking about that and if I could treat/paint/do something to it to make it last a bit longer. And what that would cost vs getting a stainless copy made up. Messing about with exhaust stuff isn't my favourite!

Unfortunately they rot from the inside out rather more than outside in.
