No, the standard radio was not ignition switched.

Some people have used the heater fan live, as this is switched by the ignition.

is the heater fan live from the switch on the heater controls or direct to the heater fan?

    thanks

Does you car have the hazzard switch on the steering collumn?

Does it have a light in the top right hand corner of the glove box?

The loom I'm describing is for radio, heater switch, glovebox light, cigarette lighter and heater.

Th glovebox light has a ign live from the fuse box on an 88 on car

Fusebox dark green with 12 contacts but only 3 used

    Black 2 wires = ?
    Grey/blue 2 wires = illumination
Black/red = ign live eventually goes to glovebox light

If you remove the dash surround (8 Screws)

1 at the middle of the top of the radio din slot
3 behind the radio heater facia
    2 at above the clocks
1 behind the lower switch/switch blank to thr left of the instrument pannel
    1 behind the headlight switch

Remove the rest of the switches then remove the dash insert

if you follow the wires back from the heater facia bulb connector (two wires one grey/blue and one brown) youll find a thin black/red wire, if you havn't got a glove box light carefully pull this out away from the glove box.

This wire ends in a female lucas teminal (insulated) use this as your ign live.

    Hope this all makes sense

I found a spare plug in my dash not plugged into anything, had a red/black wire so I checked with a volt meter and it was an ignition live.
I removed one of the unused wires from my radio loom and crimped a spade on the other end, fitted it to the plug and back into the radio loom in the right place and hey presto me CD player now works :)

I can take a piccy if anyone needs me to?

i tapped into the ign live from my heater switch, but i used a big fat
distributrion block to sort out power, since its probably not the best idea
    to have crimps in there....(fire...!)

Shouldn't be a problem, the radios only use the ignition live to tell them when to switch on/off, they pull their voltage through the main live.

Well, ones that have been designed properly should anyway...

I use the ignition live from the rear heated screen switch, mainly cause it is roght next to it and it has a nice big fuse so it shouldn't affect it too much when they are both working.

I would say to use a crimp as long as it is really well crimped. Those distrbution (chocolate) blocks really are rubbish and more of a risk of fire becasue you are turning a screw down into the cable and can cut the wires. With a crimp you are crushing it so much that the 2 metals a bond, or a cold metal weld. If you are thinking about using the chocolate block cause it can be disconnected, well whats wrong with spade connectors?

my distribution block doesnt use screws, it uses the pressure of the
plastic cover to keep everything in place, just like a plug. 4 screws keep
    the plastic in place (lol)

    aha!..
what about the 'headlight dimming' connector?
does some sort of resistor need to be fitted to make this feature work (blaupunkt)
the control to dim the switches seems to have some minimal effect, but not enough?

Hello, so I’ve bought a blaupunkt Bremen, and was happy to see that the original connectors plug straight into it, but it won’t power up!
What have I got to do to make it work?
