So, I always assumed when checking the 020 gearbox levels that level with the filler plug was correct. As I am messing with my gearbox at the moment I had a read of the Bentley manual and came across the info in the picture. Early models - fill to said level, refit plug 25nm then pour an extra half a litre through the speedo drive hole Later models - AFTER no.08097 built 9/8/87 just fill to the filler plug level as this is now 7mm higher in the casing I thought I would post this up incase anyone else with an early model had this query
yeah the engine is rotated slightly in a mk2 compared to a mk1, but what isnt mentioned is what you do in mk1 cabrio and scirocco with mk1 engine orientation and later type gearbox, do you have to put oil in under the drain level, or is it still ok to add extra up to the higher oil drain level
BrokeVW touches a bit on what you mention about Cabrios's / Scirocco's. Probably going to get shot down in flames saying this but Cressa posting up random helpful info. for no other reason than he's thinking of like minded owners is exactly why I use forums and avoid social media like the plague... completely different mind set.
Just ordered some genuine gearbox oil from TPS. I saw a thread that rubjonny had posted of it needing G060726A2 and it is still available. 2 litres for £20.58 - bargain
When I changed the gearbox oil in my car I did the speedo cable method and added the extra. The box started weeping oil through all the seals. I ended up draining off the excess via the plug and approx 400ml came out. Since then there have been no issues.
That is an interesting and worrying post as I was intending on doing the same. I dont suppose you know the gearbox code and number of yours. Just wondering if it was an early or later 020
The underside of the gearbox has the manufacturing date stamped on it. That Sept '87 date referred to by Bentley will decide which filling method to use. This is my date stamp (19th August 1991) - the last, single digit refers to the year (1 in my case). As the boxes production in MK2's only spanned specific years there was no need to differentiate between for example 1981 and 1991... you assume 1 refers to '91, or that 9 is 1989. AUG isn't the month, but the gearbox code. Don't know what the 4 on mine refers to.
I have that same crazy last number that I dont know what it refers too.... I have tried looking but nothing ever mentioned that last digit
Just noticed my number is the day/month/year format (19081) Do you think Bentley have wrongly applied the US month/day/year format? They interpret 08097 as 9th August. when we would say it's 8th September. Would matter if your box fell within that month. Luckily BrokeVW has a section with images that shows how to visually tell which box is which.
When I changed the oil in my gearbox I just added the 2 liters of oil. Car is 90 spec gti 8v. Had to jack the car on the nearside fairly high to get all the oil in but no leaks and sounds and works fine.
I'm pretty sure you're right and the correct cut off date is the 8th September 1987, BrokeVW quotes that and my own number won't translate to the US way of date reading as there's obviously no 19th. month. I think its definitely a typo. by whoever was writing the small bit in the Bentley notes section you've pictured above. We're so far either side of the date we know which method applies and it doesn't matter, but could prove important to someone whos box doesn't get that last .5 litre of oil via the speedo hole because they fall somewhere in between. Thanks again for posting... always good when you're prompted to look into something more deeply and then able to thrash it out with interested others.
I wouldnt even go by the code on the box, might have been fiddled with. look at the end casing where the filler plug is, late has the filler moved slightly up vs early and thats why they dont need extra oil added in
Regardless of code, all 020 5spd are 2 litres. Put it through the speedo drive, just don't drop the drive gear into the box haha
