    Hi guys

So I have acquired a MK2 Driver 1.6 which ya been reliably used by my father in law for the last 3 years.

It has stood for 2 weeks and is now utterly refusing to start! Never had any issues before.

I have checked the basics, its getting a spark and there is fuel being delivered.

At first it would crank and crank but as I stoped the crank (turned the key off) it would splutter once. Did this a few times and then havent done anything since.

Tried using a new can of easy start and its not even coughing not a sausage.

Tried over 2 different days a few days apart.

Before I start to blame the 2e2 carb are there any other obvious things I need to check? I havent worked on a carb car for a few years!!!!

I have RJs guide to the 2e2 so will start working through that but Im surprised I dont get a single cough!

As the cars not made it home to me yet I need to go up to work on it so want to be prepared.

I did also pop the air box off and all looks normal and the carb looked wet with fuel.

Noticed no vaccine with my hand over the air box inlet but I know it has a hot air intake also so probably no surprise

    Thanks and Merry Christmas

A service is definitely on the books but I need to get her home to do that.
Hoping to get up there tomorrow and check what I can.
Can not understand with a spark why the easy start isnt firing off.

Are the plugs wet? That carb has a rubber mounting to the inlet manifold. They do split/perish over time. Worth checking the condition of it.Has a mechanical fuel pump too. Pull the delivery end of it off & crank it over just to be sure the carb is getting fuel. I can't say I know anything about the 2e2 Pierburg carb. If I thought anything was remotely suspect about it, I'd probably buy a pirate copy.

Basics, to me. Visible spark, rocker cover off, check position of rotor arm to TDC, to HT lead / plug position, to valves 'rocking' (compression). Actual compression. Easy start. Engine runs? Must be carb.... No cold start enrichment?
    Hope this helps
    Good luck

    Thanks all for the help!
Will be going to ecp in a bit for plugs and a compression tester.
Does anyone know off hand what plugs are required as ecp shows ten different plugs and their info is useless.
I do have a Haynes but need to go to to work to get it and its shut till Tuesday! Doh!

Annoyingly I pass all the shops before I get to where the car is. If I cant find out before I leave I think Ill do that as there are so many damn variations!!
Machine mart for a compression tester too I think, cant believe the prices others charge for a crap brand!!

hmmmm ok so stoped and started fine a few times. Now it does at idle when warm and will only restart with foot flat to the floor.
    Changed plugs for new ones.
Next I will be looking at the fuel system as is seems its either starving due to poor fuel flow or a vacuum leak.

    Thanks all

So... managed to get the car home tonight. Was running fine until we got to the driveway and then started to splutter again.
    Smelt very very rich!
Will only warm start with my foot to the floor?!?

Does this point to anything in particular?

have you checked the flange yet? make sure the steady bracket is fitted to the head and the rubber bobbin mount thingy hasnt split. without that the carb will flap about and split the flange again. I assume its already had a complete service, cap, arm, leads, fuel filter etc

Cap arm leads fuel filter and oil on to do list this week along with brakes.
    Plugs and air filter done.
I did put pressure down on the top of the carb to see if I could hear any changes due to leaks on the flange but no change. Will have a better look with a torch tonight.
Is this bobbin the one on the front of the air box?

    Ta
