That is due to the planetary gear-set inside. Now your car will sound a bit 'modern' when starting.

Excellent advice again men. Thank you.
    - I added the planetary geared starter with switched 5th injector feed to my abf/020 set up and noticed improved starting confidence hot and cold.
    Great upgrade.

I have hot-start issues since i rebuilt my stock MK2 GTI 16V (KR). Cylinders were honed and fitted new piston rings. Compression test after 500km running-in shows 13,2 to 14,2 Bar so seems I need to upgrade the starter motor.

Not clear to me if I should go for a MK3 GTI 8V or MK2/MK3 diesel starter?

    No one?

Also, I've been comparing the mk2 and mk3 2.0 ones online but the shafts are different and not like on the picture in the beginning of this thread?? I also went to my local brakers and indeed, they only have the ones without shaft end sticking out..

    See here what I mean:

Hi there, sorry to resurrect this. I have fitted a new type starter to my gti 16v without the cold start 5th injector plugged in. Could anyone help me find the correct diode I would use to wire this up.

    Many thanks

THe MK3 starter is to be fitted with a 02A gearbox, that's why it is different.

I am also very interested in the part number of a MK3 020 starter with planetary gearset!

Look for an AGG engined mk3 8v or Seat equivalent
