    It begins....

One last look at the KR where i presume it has been since 1988.

There goes the old knocking donkey.

And where someone had cut through the heatsheild presumably to get at the dash bolts. Which were rusted on anyway. I had several texts from the restorer whilst he was stripping it which contained words like 'deathtrap' and 'accident waiting to happen'. Many bushes were none-existent, bolts were cross threaded throughout the suspension set up. And its mot had about 3 advisories. [emoji52]

And thats the story so far. No going back now. I very nearly didn't go through with this. I had a voice of reason (more of a whisper) which kept saying 'what are you doing!!? Think of the cost!!'
But I firmly believe that if your not following your passions your wasting your time. And yes it would be loads cheaper to buy a mint example but it wouldn't really be 'my own' so sod it, you only live once. Oh and just for fun this what else they have going on in the shop.

Just been reading and enjoying your thread, looking forward to seeing the new paint job by the way those bolts only hold the heater air box in and are on a coarse self tapping thread in the plastic

Ah thanks valvemiester, good to know. They've started stripping the paintwork and they've discovered that it has been another colour besides black... Wait for it.. PINK!! My car has had a hard life it seems. Next major update will be February. Thanks for reading! [emoji106]

Not a big update but it is at the same time. The hardest part to find for my build has just been bought. Full set of early gti side mouldings. Very made up I've got these.

Had some more pictures today. I was a little bit speechless [emoji52]

So it's been monza blue (original colour and reason I bought the car) and the poor thing has been red, yellow, pink and black.

On the upside panels look pretty straight.

thats a lot of layers of paint! But at least that was extra padding to protect the metal below lol

nice to see its getting a bare metal job. Would love to have that done on mine one day.

Ha your dead right Rye the metal was protected thankfully, as these pics will show...

Shoulda called this the mk2 onion.

Was around 100 in paint stripper alone. I think there was that many layers of paint I think I would felt quite safe driving through chernobyl.

There was quite a warp in the chassis leg, I knew it had taken a prang but it was slightly worse than I thought but is quite repairable.

The rear badge had been filled in but the oem geek in me would have to get this put back.

Ooo shiny, something quite satisfying seeing a car in bare metal. And no nasty surprises.

The vw heritage wings are a good quality metal but they do require quite a bit of fettling.

Bonnet is going to be replaced, why it's not been stripped. Too far gone underneath.

Etch primer applied to outer shell.

And that's the lot for now, picture heavy I know. Really happy with the progress so far and the lack of structural corrosion. Next big update will be in April. Still on course for paint in autumn/winter this year.

Vw heritage wings were a pain to 'fit' but they have done a good job! Not the best quality pics, will get better ones in a couple of weeks.

    No more squ-wiff shut lines.

    Also g60 brakes came yesterday.

Just need the hubs now. Ahh it's all a bit of stress this restoration lark. Paint should be on in late autumn if all goes well!

Update 3: Tin worm removal and welding! Picture heavy but I love the workmanship that's going into it. And this is just the left wheel well/arch and sill[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Nice work being done there . I'd have one of my cars up there if I didn't have a wife and two kids plus other hobbies using up my finances lol
Nice pictures thanks for sharing your cars progress

Thanks mate. Yeah I'm made up with the workmanship so far. Ha and i do know how you feel and that's why this is a once in a lifetime thing for me this. Before I have to 'grow up'.

Here is the right side. Pretty much the same story as the left. The next big update will come in June. And will be focussing on the underside which is need of some deserved attention.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

And how she sits now. Etch primed and bare. Nervous how the underneath will look when that's stripped back.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

The rear lower valance is being replaced completely. It had a prang at some point anyway and is pretty rotten as you can see. So a replacement panel is on offer from vwheritage. The tailgate was shotblasted and primed. It had a few scabs around the seals etch but was in largely good condition compared to the original that was on the car. [IMG][IMG]
