    Hi all

I am in the process of changing the cambelt on my Mk2 8 Valve PB Engine 1988 GTI

I have followed the Haynes Manual Direction but have the following issue (the original belt is still on and timing was OK prior to starting this task)

I am unable to align the V pulley with the notch on the intermediate sprocket. It is worth noting I took the pulley of some time ago so may have not returned it's original position. I have tried setting the camshaft mark and the cam lobes to the correct position and using this known good position to then line up intermediate sprocket and the pulley . I have tried every way and it does not seem to work

    Any pointers greatly recieved

    Thanks

The intermediate shaft isn't really important, you can turn the dizzy to suit.

    Thanks Tristan

set the dizzy to cylinder one position, as the mark on the dizzy ? then set the camshaft, lobes and ensure the flywheel is at top dead centre and that is the engine timed correct?

I should then remove the old belt and install the new

fit the belt making sure crank and cam marks are correct , turn dizzy to line up with the #1 notch , use strobe light to check /adjust timing afterwards

The crank pulley on my DX has a dimple in the back so you can only refit it in one position.

ideally use the flywheel mark for the crank , its more accurate

    All

thanks for the responses to date

    I have
    - set the crank shaft to TDC using the dimple on the flywheel (not the diamond)
    - set the cam mark to the face of the head
    - set the dizzy to spark plug #1 position

And then put the new cam belt on, reassembled and tried to start

Car will not start and sounds terrible (back firing etc etc)

Any thoughts advice would be greatly welcomed

have you rechecked sinse trying it ?

confirm piston is at #1 tdc by poking something clean into the plug hole , check the leads are on correctly if youve had them off

I will check piston#1 is at tdc when I set the engine to tdc

Am I correct in saying piston#4 needs to be at the top as well when the engine is at tdc

Am gonna check the leads tomorrow order is 1,3,4 and 2 clockwise

Does the dizzy goes clockwise or anti-clockwise on engine running status ?
