1991 Jetta GLX 16v

    Hello,

    Going to look at a 1991 Jetta GLX 16V tomorrow that,s for sale.

    If anyone has more info on this model that would be appreciated.
    Is an automatic transmission, but if I buy it I will change to manual gearbox, shouldn,t be a big problem I guess..

    not much to say about it really, same as equivalent engine golf mechanically so all the same checks apply. look for signs of water behind the fusebox and heater blower. could be easy fit or it might be serious rot at the A pillar which cannot be seen unless wings removed. front jacking point and sills common rot spots, under filler flap, ends of the front and rear sills and back of the rear arches under the bumper too.

    engine should start easy, make sure its not been warmed up before you got there. nice even idle, good power thruout the rev range. gearbox should shift nice, crunch into 2nd is common fault. handling should be tight and brakes good, though if any of that side is poor its an easy & cheap fix since parts are reasily available and cost peanuts but good bargaining point

    shouldnt be any rattles and squeeks, if there are any usually means things have been taken apart in the past and not quite screwed together properly. not a real cause for concern if you dont mind getting stuck in. get the fusebox cover off though and check the state of the wiring under, often you'll find its a right state under but if its untouched thats a plus.

    check 1 key does all the locks, though not particularly hard to sort if not but again good bargaining point. lots of history is nice to have but with a car this old not the end of the world look at the car as it is now, not how it was looked after in the past. after all full dealer service history up to late 90s wont have helped it survive since then :lol:

    trim wise rear bumper obv is harder to get than golf, headliner and gutter strips also jetta specific so you want them in good nick else can be a struggle to find good ones

    My biggest "surprise" is the automatic trans.
    Haven't seen that on GTI 8V or 16V in those years.

    Going to see the car at noon,curious to see what state it's in.
    Mileage is 136.000 km => 85.000 miles

    Yeah is pretty rare, but I guess the jetta is more of an 'old man' car so if you're gonna find one it would be in one of those [:D]

    is a chance its been swapped in the past, not that you really care if you got the skills to swap it back. mileage is really low if genuine so thats a plus for sure :)

    Drum brakes at the rear
    small discs in front
    clock instead of tachometer
    1.6 Diesel
    Automatic trans

    Case closed
    It DID have a Jetta GLX 16V badge though

    Well the badge is 90% of the horsepower dude, things "factry" :lol:
