Why should you consider this conversion?

Well, there is always that old chesnut with us dubbers.
You ahve your 8v but the power just isnt as much as you want. You can't justify a 20vt conv, you dot want to sell your motor......
Its 2litre bottom end time! [:D]

....coupled with a hot cam, gas flowed head and decent straight through exhaust you can get some good power and torque for hardly any money at all.

The 8v gti in its standard form seems to keep a lot of dubbers amused as its pretty quick, but adding a 2litre bottom end gives you that extra grunt!

The 8v golf is a much better car to drive that the 1800 16v as you dont need to rag the shyte out of it to get somwhere..

    Onto the conversion. [:D]

    What blocks can I use?

The 2E, AGG, ABA, 3a, AWG, AWF engines from Various mk3 golfs, passats and audis.

What should I pay for one of these blocks?

Anything from free to 300 quid! These blocks are very solid so they should be in good nick providing the previous owners looked after the car with regular oil changes etc

    What head do I use?

Well, your original PB head is fine for the job but while it is off you could get it ported and polished by your local machinist at a respectable amount!

What do I do about Head Gaskets? Which one do I use?

    Mk3 one will do fine!

Does the head fit straight on?

It does. I used the AWG bottom end in my Cabby and it had one strange stud on the top of the bottom end where the head gasket mates onto it. There wasnt a hole in the Head Gasket for it so I just sheared it off! Heehee!

    What about Dizzys?

You cant use the mk3 Dizzy . You need to use the mk1 one with the aid of a Ring available from TSR. Only about 20(I have one for sale!!!)

    How hard is the conversion?

Well, I managed with the help of my mechanic mate and as long as you have an engine hoist( when doing it in the mk1s) you will be fine. Remember that mk2s the front panel can be unbolted and you can roll the car into the desired position.

    Is it worth it?

Definitely. My car pulls so well, off the lights its great, point to point its great..

Obviously, if you want out and out power then this isnt the conversion for you---->look to 2litre 16v or vr or 20vt..

    But I like it!

    IM LUVIN IT!!!

Add this to the Engine FAQs please!

The mk3 head doesnt flow as well as the mk2 one so you wont get as much power out of it. However, it would be an easier conversion if you are already using digifant injection.

Im considering a 2.0 bottom end myself but im concerned that it will make the car even less "revvy" than it already is. What kind of RPM does your motor tail off at rags??

5k ish i reckon...its all about the low down torque!!! .....i never look normally, but you can feel it. From what I have heard about your car from yourself, you have some great power from a driver....i think the 2litre bottom end will compliment the mods and making more driveable....obviously only in my opinion but lets just say i dont need to rev the fuk out of my car to have fun...whereas my mates with 16v's are really going for it when we race!

there is not much difference to be honest, only age.

The 3a and 2e are older ones from audi 80's and mk3 gti's respectively as well as pishrats!

The rest are from golfs andlater pishrats....

i wouldnt let that worry you to be honest....

TSC will tell you.....he just got some 2litre blocks!

It will certainly make for a torquey motor anyway. What it like against a standard 1.8 16v? I take it top speed is about the same, 120ish??

if you want top speed increase its not gonna be much.....but im not really interested in brown pants speeds to be honest...im a 0-100 man....no need to prove anything after that!

    But yes, similar to valvers!

Smithy, best bet is to just DO IT! [:D]

I can get hold of an audi 2.0 block for nothing, but the crank bearings are knocking (im guessing the oil pump went). One of my mates said he could get the crank done with new shell bearings for 40 quid. What do you think?

So let me get this straight...

Any 2 litre block from VW, Audi or Seat?
does it have to be an 8v block to keep compression the same?
There are lots of 2l 16v audi's lying around...

How do you know what your compression is going to be like or are they all pretty much the same. If I am doing this then I want to keep my c/r high. Its currently slightly over 11:1 on my 1.8

No idea on the conversion - just wanted to add that if u were looking for a 2E or AGG then there are other cars aside from those already listed which you can plunder. Good thing perhaps with Seat is that they tended to get the engines a bit later than VW/Audi so may be in better nick eg AGG ws in mk2 Ibiza up till 1999 or even 2000; ditto for ABF which didn't make it to mk4 Golf (?).

What sort of compression ratios do each of the 2.0 blocks give with a mk2 head?? Im guessing the one I can get out of that Audi is a 3A block, think its an F plate...

Proper job Rags, this FAQ really needed doing.

    If I may add some...

    Breathers

the 2E and many other 2.0 blocks have a crankcase breather system
similar to the 16v. i.e. a baffled vent on the front of the block that
plumbs into the inlet system. There are a number of ways you can
deal wth this in a PB DX type replacement.

1 Block it off with a plate (TSR etc. sell them or you could make one)
2 Fit a tarty filter and vent to the air, K&N etc do small filters for this
but you need the plastic manifold from the original block to help fit
it. (i stuck a rag in the end of a fat radiator hose but I'm not someone
to set an example of engineering standards here) If there is a lot of
blowby then the smell will get on your tits though.
3 Use the mk3 golf bits including the rubber pipes and do a factory
looking job of T-ing it into the rocker cover breather.

With K-Jet cars the distributor may need an adaptor ring if it is the
one with the narrow body and the small gear on the drive end. The
gear needs to be swapped too by knocking out the pin through the
end (Swapping intermediate shafts doesnt work as they hit the crank
in some applications I believe, I know PB int shaft hits the 2E crank)

Most 2L blocks have a comp ratio of 10.5:1 or 10.8:1

but the compression is s function of head space plus TDC space (piston crowns etc)
If I stick a skimmed PB head on the wrong 2l block, do i run the risk of running silly C/R?

Are all the pistons the same?
