It was a mod we used to do 20 years ago lol, needs the chain wheel machining to work properly. I think Stealth racing used to mod them. Generally it's the intake cam that needed changing to a KR one from the 9A
exhaust cams are all the same KR, PL or 9A, they have bigger duration and lift than intake cams, you have to cut the pulley end and adjust timing using offset woodruff key or adjustable chain wheel..
Sounds a good modification but not something i could do myself what sort of power gain would you get with this modification?
@Hotgolf on here used to do them but packed up years ago, think it was because of a tooling cost? Can't remember, as said its yonks ago.
The twin exhaust mod, was done years ago, when folks did not know better and before the engines were better understood. 9A engines, before the introduction of the 051103373D cylinder head, ran a mild inlet camshaft with ~ 8.8 mm lift , the same cam found on a PL engine. Folks fitted the 10.2 mm lift exhaust cam for an intake, pressing the gear in a location to compromise over lap. Yes it caused torque to shift a bit to the right of the rpm band for more reported power, but had drive issues with the Kjet system compromised a bit off full load. The 2.0 16v engine in South Africa, aka the AAL, runs the same inlet cam as a KR engine with 9.6 mm lift , meaning it generates the same level of the torque as the 9A, deeper in the the engine speed range to be rated 150 bhp @ 6000 rpm. No drive issues with KJet. Fitting a KR inlet to a 9A basically creates your own AAL. These cam sets are not to be confused with the 007 or 051 101/102 cams fitted to later 9A, 6A, ACE, ABF and ADL engines. That is a different story that has a similar trend.
I’m not sure of the age of my engine it’s from a passat should i be checking the markings on the cam? Is this worth doing and does it make much difference?
An early Passat 9A 2.0 16v, will have a cylinder head cast number of 0511103373. If it that is the cylinder head ID'd to your car, then you will must likely have an 027 inlet cam 027 101 022 AL. It might have a number as '027 101A' etched into the inlet cam. That needs to be replaced with a KR intake camshaft.
Ok thanks and is that the only difference from the AAL engine as there is about 12 bhp difference also is there a bigger throttle body that’s a direct fit?
After 20 years, it is still the best performance cam you can have for free.. ok, for few pounds for the offset woodruff key. I used it years before on my KR, and I do not recall any problems, sure I did not dynoed the car and I had no wideband those days, so maybe the fueling was not perfect, but it worked. now with 9A and megasquirt it is superb, strong bottom end , pulls to redline..
Before going to Schrick cams I used ABF in my 9a with very good results. Probably still got them in the garage.
What is the difference between abf and 9a cams? What sort of difference did you see? And would abf cams be better than kr cams? I may be interested in the cams if you still have them?
Somewhere on here there is a chart for all the cams differences, think the thread was by toyotec https://www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/a-vw-16v-camshaft-study.156126/
I will check in the garage this morning. From memory it made 197bhp at the fly. That was with twin 45 webers, 4-1 manifold and 2.5” system.
