Looking for some help from the ABF 16v gurus. Engine has just been fully rebuilt and put back in the car. Got it running but it has a couple of issues. On cold start the revs will hunt up and down for 10 or so seconds then idle fine. It doesn’t do it when warmed up. Second issue is the oil light permanently flashes. If you give it a little rev it’ll beep too. Oil level is good and it is getting up to the cams. The engine had been out the car for about a year so it’s possible some sensors could be wired up wrong if possible. Engine gets up to temp, fan cuts in and the temp gauge on dials is reading right. No faults under engine control module on vag com. Vacuum hoses, oil pump and ISV are all brand new. Interior is in pieces so lots of pieces are still unplugged if that could be anything to do with it. Please throw some suggestions at me, I’m no mechanic but I’ve spent the last year restoring this

    1. if not already done so take the loom off the engine from the round plug and check round the back of the inlet, it'll probably be baked hard and split. you can bin the breather heater plug while you're there its the 2 pin with black and brown. the brown earths straight to head so easy, black is tapped into ISV ignition live so carefully snip off the crimp and re-tape. then check idle switch is working, best way to do this is with vagcom, look at the measuring blocks for the idle switch. grab the label files from here:

    2. check the 2 oil switch wires, the yellow wire goes to the big white switch and the blue/black to the big brown or blue one. green/black to the small white or black sensor. you can see the wire colours right at the end of the crimp just before it goes into the terminal, the black over-sheath stops and can see the actual wire colour underneath
