Right I have a 97 MK3 and had the same issue. Driving home from work it just cut out so I changed the leads,plugs, dizzy cap,rotor arm and coil pack and nothing. I then changed the crank sensor and it started. I drove it for about a week and it’s stopped again and when I plug a reader in it is saying sporadic - signal outside tolerance? I be put another brand new crank sensor in and nothing does anyone have any ideas please
Try with distributor plug removed, also remove sensor and check reluctor ring inside. Does it see rpm on the reader?
