The ATMR VW Cup Car is one I’ve known for many many years and one that the majority of the VW world has forgot that existed, including me. It raced in the Castle Coombe Saloons in 2004 and then the 2005 VW Cup. Was built from a bare shell in 2003 form a low mileage GTI 16V ABF.

Originally it was the sister car to the legendary VW & Audi Centre MK2 16V Scirocco championship winning car

It popped up for sale in 2017 on Race Cars Direct, 12 years since its last race. It was over the Christmas period and then disappeared but I kept the owners details and as he was a friend of a friend and I caught up with him in late 2018 and viewed the car.

It was in excellent condition still and looked fresh and not tired one bit. It had been subject to a mechanical rebuild a few years earlier. Just as a refresh. Engine, box, fuel system and brakes etc

When I viewed the car it wouldn’t fire up. So we chatted and left it at that. Roll on to 2019 i had a Facebook message with a video of the car running. Turned out to be a collapsed fuel filter from it standing for so long. But the owner had only just got round to sorting it.

So a deal was done and I bought it. Was just too good to pass up.

Not 100% sure as yet. But its perfect for the VW Classic Cup Class B. The spec is very good and potentially a championship winning car IMO

But needs bringing up to date for MSA Regs first.

looks like it could be a handy runaround for trips up to the shops, plenty room inside. make sure you always wear your helmet and racing gear though, safety first so many nutters on the roads these days

I am glad you have finally got the car and it looks a cracker. Hopefully you get it out on track this year once the grey one is ready.

Cheers Martin, on with jobs with her already. Mostly bolt in stuff so far. But have the fire extinguisher system to do next week and a pedal box conversion as I need to ditch all the ABS stuff. Was considering just converting to a 4 pipe brake cylinder but found OBP do a conversion to convert to a twin cylinder set up but still using the existing pedal which is ideal, more of a OEM job but a few more £££ than I wanted to spend. Have a set of rims with some Nankangs AR1s ready, new steering wheel, new Seat, new Willans Hans harness and a change of rear lights. Just couldn't been seen racing a golf with Lexus rear lights lol or a shinny after market gear knob.so had to be done as Just so wrong !

    So all coming together.

Only issue so far is the paint behind the door number squares was missing, been pulled off when the old ones were removed. So having big doors resprayed.

So to take this tread on another step, I acquired this car earlier in the year. The car hadn't really moved much in the last few years and I was in contact with the owner above but missed out on buying it when me moved it on, but he kept an eye on it for me inc case it came on the market again....which it did. A deal was done and it moved in with me and my stable of VW race cars :-)

I have always quite fancied a MK3 Kitcar, however they are quite pricey now and often worn out, so this car is a great basis for a Kitcar build. Its done very little work, no rust and was built to a high budget and spec back in the day.

I only really want the shell and the decent fixtures and fittings, as I have most of the parts to build a decent works copy, so it will be stripped and the parts either sold or moved on to other duties. The cage was supplied and fitted by Custom Cages, who also supplied the UK works Kitcars, so that's a good start.

I have most of the bits, many ex works, to build a decent kit car engine, plus an ex works Gemini 6 speed sequential gearbox, inc. clutch, drive shafts, CV's etc. In addition a selection of other useful parts.

I have started gathering the other key parts I need and have juts received a set of Kitcar front hubs and some rose jointed beam bushes, but still have a few other key parts to collect.

It won't be a quick build as these things take time and cost money! plus I've other race cars to be upgraded and/or sold prior to this one starting its transformation. I will upload some pics as and when if it is of any interest.

This build will not be a paint, bodywork and sticker facsimile of a kit car, it is planned to be a properly engineered Kitcar replica, not a lookalike.

As I said above, I have a number of key parts but also need others, so as time and money allow I've started squirreling them away. Some parts are essential as they are the heart of any works F2/Kitcar, whereas others are not so critical. The front hubs and drive train of any works Kitcar will always be bespoke, so an important part of the build, and these arrived from Sweden last week.

    Custom CV bolts

And fits to my Gemini CV's and therefore the shafts and box.

They are pretty cool, have you had them made or have you sourced them?

Off the shelf, MM Motorsport in Sweden. Spoke to them last week as a few people had been enquiring and they say they are going to make another batch.....but believe they have a set on the shelf, but best check.

So I was wondering whether to go for the classic twin Morette type headlights as used buy some kitcars or go for the single type used by SBG, or even std. I don't really like the single head light set up, and the std is a little dull, so decided to use the twin type.

Morette are still making their version, but decided that the Hella ones were probably what VWMS would have used given the choice and managed to find a NOS set locally. They will be colour coded to the shell as and when, and in fact SBG are also building a MK3 Kitcar at present, and they appear to be using the twin head light set up this time.

And I believe the SBG car

And the set I have acquired
