What you need - in my opinion - is a tapered shaped spacer to slide over this. Thick at the top and narrow at the bottom with a second sharper taper down to the ball join (to aid clearance for movement), then they would work ok - subject to suitable pre load applied to the whole assembly prior to tightening the pinch bolt. The wide spacer at the top would spread the load.

As Mart points out, the problem with many of these spacers is the sharp change of angle where the two machined faces meet. The sharp angle induces a stress point [weakness], this is where we see these extenders fail.

What you need is a rounded section at the meeting point of the two faces [far less stress], with a taper in the corresponding mounting point on the hub, to allow the spacer to fit properly.

    Just my thoughts.

So I am in the process of putting together of an extender for the mk1 and I am particularly fond of this bolt in design.

Has anybody come across any more solutions or ideas since this last discussion?

Gurds, me loverly lad. How are you?

I recon. that this is a pretty good solution! The stresses are low with no serious stress raisers!
It also allows adjustment of height with various spacers.

How close is the ball joint mounting area on a MkI compared with a MkII?
I have the MkII drawn up and if close enough I could draw the expenders accurately for you!

    Kindest regards always,
    Dave.
