    Hi,

I'm thinking of getting some wheels to sling on the cars for trackday use only. Bearing in mind that if its wet I'll use my Eagle F1's so they only need dry grip, which are the best boots?

I am interested in longevity and predictability/feel rather than outright grip. would be 195/50/15

I was thinking just get some cheapo's.

I've heard that Yoko A539s are very good in the dry, but poop in the wet. :)

I'd avoid road tyres if you want track only tyres. Be wary of slicks too cos you might put untoward stress on your car. Companies like Colway produce some tyres which might be of interest.

I was going to go for the Yoko`s to start with, same with me using f1`s on the road and wet track so only need a set for dry track use..

Finding a set of cheap 15`s is a bit difficult as well!

I heard that track bias tyres are generally softer for more grip. I want hard as hell road tyres.

Whats best, small blocks close together or big blocks far apart?

you could go for a set of road tyres to begin with... (GVK, Tub, myself) we all run road tyres on track (at the mo)

A539s are great for a dry track,
i'm quite impressed with my bridgestones (RE720s).

if you want a track only tyre...(cut slicks as on most track days full slicks aren't allowed.
    Yoko A0 series,
    Colway,
    Avon,

all these companies make cut slicks at reasonable ish prices (for track tyres)
the yokos are approx 95 each iirc [:^(]

Road tyres aren't ideal - but nor is the cost of cut slicks for some of us.

Out of the tyres I've used I rate the Yokohama A539s on a dry track.

They seem to stand up well, even though other tyres may give better outright grip

Toyo T1-S and Good-Year F1s are great in the wet but their V groove tread patterns fall over with hard use in the dry

    I get A539s in 195/50x15 for 25 + vat a tyre

    You're looking 60 + vat for a cheapy Colway Formula 2 in 15" - and they only do 185/55 or 205/50

    http://www.cars.u-net.com/colwaymotorsport_m.htm

Yokohama A032R are only available in 205/50 also

Yokohama A038s are used by what I call the 'elite' CGTI track day people and are available in 195/50 which suits the mk2

Bill (when he had his Jetta)
    Mad20v
    Chris Eyre

Graham got a year's woth of track days out of his set of A038s - but remember half the time he got black flagged by his mate from Combe due to noise [:D]

Shop around and you can get the A048s for about 90 a corner -

If you are using road tyres , you're better of using tyres that have 3-4mm than new ones,I've got a pile of various half-fecked tyres for the job ;)

Just need another set of 7x15" wheels ....

I spoke to ABP motorsport about this tyre thing after i anhialted my Toyos first time at donny.. they were 2 weeks old and were at canvas by the end of the day.

Anyway, this time at Donny i had a max of 3mm tread all round (as reccomended to me) and they lasted really well. It seems it's more the tread depth than pattern...?

    A038R's are good tyres...
    Serve me old Jetta well.

Kumho Esta 700's are an option...
Some sprint cars were using regular Esta's I believe as they are soft and grippy for regular road tyres..

I was looking at the Kuhmo motorsport tyres at AutoSport show Bill - they don't do a 195/50 tyre either in 15" [:^(]

Excellent info there guys, (full info as usual Gary - ta) I can go 205/50 , only choose 195 for the price advantage.

The colways seem like a half decent price but would they last? Would want a lot of use for that money, bearing in mind I'm more interested in having fun than outright grip, would these be overkill?

what are other peoples experience with Yoko road (A539) longevity when used on track, Gary you said they stand up well, 1 session or 10?

I had some Kumho Ecsta's briefly on my golf 215's. They were utter cheese in the wet, but hey, they are cheap. I might try them, failing that, Gary can you get me some tyres!!

It's so difficult buying tyres, especially when you know you're going ot destroy them on purpose [xx(]

My experience - Avon zv1's hard as f11ck 24 each lasted for yonks, but cr4p in the wet.

Gsd2 F1's Top tyre in the wet never used in the dry

Colway F2 not bad grip wet or dry !! long lasting coming up to there 1st birthday 240 for a set 205/55

Still yet to find a really good tyre but have to use whichever i have bought before going onto the next which mybe dunlop's or acb10's or yoko's

My GSD3's got stickier in the dry at Combe on the MKIV than the Kumho's do on the Ibiza... make of that as you will. Still lasting too!

I f**ked my f1`s after 2 dry sessions, may have been an idea to swap front to back like Gary but I left it too late.

Yoko A539`s sound right for what I want!
