my autograss mk2 polo coupe is running a 2.1 2E 8 valve bottom end with a flowed and ported big valve head running a very lumpy kent gs6 cam. i think thats the code anyway. on twin webber dcoe 45's and its made 186 bhp and revs limited to 7500. and very reguarly bounce the limiter.

    am considering a 16v though

If it's got the power gary & it was for competition then that doesn't sound that expensive.

Speaking of ultimate engines- i spyed an article on Colin McRea's own Mk2 escort in a ford mag today- 335bhp from its 2.0 (or was it 2.1?) Millington N/A screamer, wow! thats a serious bit of kit- also the suspension set up alone- wishbone rear etc was 8k!

no wonder its lumpy with those prehistoric carbs,,,
where does the power start and end come in at 7 and the game is over by 7500?

anyhow the crediton motorsport demo car looks like its really giving it some large in the pics,,
has it just been hijacked from their scrapyard?,, hmm sorry parts department?:lol::lol:;);)

we race on a 1/4 mile dirt oval and it doesn't matter what it looks like it matters what it goes like. the power is there from when i accelerate out of the corner to the end of the straight. and when you consider i'm up against 250 - 300 bhp valver nova's and corsa's it dont do to bad.

Would I be right thinking the engine is in the back?

nope. front engined front wheel drive. there isn't much in the back. all cut out and space framed. if you stand at the back you can pick the back of the car up on your own. probably only weighs about 600 kg.

    i'm thinking of building a mk4 polo with a 2 litre 16v lump for the 2007 season.

    at the risk of throwing fuel onto a fire;
    8 versus 16 (i like both tbh):
8 is half the cost for valves, cam followers, valve springs, camshafts, verniers.
    8 weighs less
    8 has less friction
8 is easier to setup the valve timing
8 has a greater choice of cams
8 is easier to pocket pistons
16 has the carbs pointing the right way
GS6 is my favourite cam, if you can keep it at full throttle between between 5 and 8000rpm (rallycross..)
    Ha!

Holy thread revival, Batman! It's an interesting one to revive though.

If I look at your pros and cons, Jon, then it seems that the optimum answer is.......

    8v X-Flow!

Phew, glad I'm building one of them then!

sat on the fence too long
    anyway GS6 is a monster
X flow? If I didnt have 6 race motors in various states, this would be on the agenda

I'll let you know how mine goes... head is back, but need to get my TiG-skilled mate to fabricate the inlet manifold, then I'll fit the 298* 12mm cam, and put it all together.

While the engine is out I'm planning to do a few mods round the engine bay as well - extra bracing, cut the slam panel and move the rad forward to make room, might extend the turret tops as well.

My 2.0L X-flow should be done and in a car ready for Santa Pod in June.......I currently have a GS6 sitting waiting to go in but may be going for a JMR special profile to suit instead!
