To be fair, the ones listed look ok - dark metal, rightly or wrongly gives a bit of assurance that the metal is high tensile.

Grayston produce some very average studs, which Demon Tweeks sell, at a phenomenal mark up (39p + VAT direct from source). These were the reason why Gary sent his back and pitched in for the VW Racing-sourced ones.

Ones that push in from the back, rather than relying on loctite, are in theory better, but are seriously high admin to fit (drill old threads out, extract front ub to bang in studs from rear, machine rear side of rear discs where stud goes through so it's flat to mount stud against etc).

However the essence of this thread was to try and answer the question 'what proper studs are out there'.

Cutting to the chase, you pays your money...

I would've been a lot happier if the plain section of the stud was raised as per the Bildon studs, could really give them some jip with a couple of 'double nutted' old wheel nuts to fit them then.

I spoke to VW Racing and the old ones they used to get from Hannover would have been like that.

However, since Mr Twiddle-The-Ends-of-he-Handlebar-Moustache-VW-Racing-boss threw the teddies out and put VW Motorsport Hannover in the skip as we knew it, VW Racing UK then went looking for UK machine shops to fill the void.

I've got some shiney new VWM s1600 polo studs in a bucket somewhere. They have a large diameter flat section which tapers at the end and the backs of the wheels are machined for a snug fit. I need to borrow a digi camera and take some pics, some other stuff for the porn thread too.

    Not sure.

Difference between them all - main point is steel quality? Rest is a bit of design. Have a study, and point some questions pls - I could write 3 para otherwise!

I've jsut got some of the Grayston studs that fit from behind (as per rallynuts link). They look spot on, shoud just about fit in to the front hubs without any machineing appart from drilling out the threads. The drums will need facing off inside aswell but not a huge problem.

For 80p each you can't go far wrong I wouldn't think.

It is on the one ive got in my hand, there is a slightly raised shoulder about 9mm from the centre of the bolt hole but there is jsut enougth machined flat surface arround the bolt hole for the studs to fit without having to skim anything down.

Hammered in from the back, the splines bite into the hubs, but the hubs need to be as flat as possible on the back face.

Hubs will need drilling out more than likely to accept the splines.

spot faced on rear of drive flanges to do the job properly so the studs sit square. rough cast finish is'nt square enough from what I remember.

I think, Bill, you're talking about the fronts...

I wouldn't think they'd need machining.. just the backs [:s]
