Apologies if info has already been posted on this (I did a search)
Does everyone here know about Council MOT test centres - they only do the test and not any work on the car, thereby have no interest in unduly failing stuff.

Last year was so hacked off at the 500 quid MOT/repair bill on my 8v (Im totally convinced they ripped me off royally but didnt have the time to investigate or take elsewhere)

Tried one of these places this year and it sailed through for the first time ever....

    Any other experiences?

    Cheers,
    DG.

didn't know they did them over here, in spain they are the only places that can mot - much farer imo and the garages still get the repair work which is where the money is for them anyway

Where I take mine the guy is the other way and doesn't seem to notice when load proportioning valves are faulty (two other vehicles), not really bothered about rusty pipes either or condensation in the headlamps.

My only concern is that if your car fails an MOT then you're not allowed to drive it are you - even if you had a couple of weeks left on the old ticket.

If they're not going to do the work how do you legally get your car out if you fail?

you can drive a car to a test centre with no MOT so why can't you drive it out if it fails?

Nice list though, something to keep in mind

According to the MOT chap, youre legally alright as long as youre going to/from a booked repair or test.
    Hope that helps,
    DG.

at least if you do get a big list of things to put right, you a)know they were needed b)know your car is now safe c) arn't constantly questioning whether you were ripped off

i'd never heard of these things before and im a mot tester. you can still drive your car if it fails providing you still have time left on your previous test as the pass over powers the fail. its one of them stupid grey areas that vosa like.

Useful list to have, but to be honest I'm grateful for the fact that the local MOT station that I use is completely straight and honest with MOTs. They'd have no motivation to fabricate any failures anyhow because they know I do all the repairs.

    Totally agree.

The place I use is very `understanding` of minor things, but are completely straight when it comes to critical stuff like brakes, suspension, structural stuff, etc.

Either way they know I undertake any work myself, so have no motivation to fail something because they think they can make money out of it.

I recently had them test the ex`s car, and it failed on rear brakes (which I had them sort out) and various minor electrical faults.

When it went for re-test they just plugged it in and went for lunch, since they knew I had sorted it out and didn`t need to check. (They had tested the brakes when they`d been adjusted, so they were known to be fine).

I think the best solution all round is to find a good, friendly tester, who knows you`ll do any work yourself, but will fix anything you can`t for a decent price.

Took my A4 there after I finished the control arms.

    Bayside Garage (non-council):

Booked the car in, left it with them, had a phone call three hours later saying it failed on control arms and advised on rear wheel bearings. Didn't show me the play on the car. Changed a control arm on one side but couldn't find the play on the other side. Took it back for retest within a week and said I couldn't find play. Asked if he could PHONE ME when it was on the ramp so I could come see what he was talking about. Got a phone call three hours later saying it failed again but they never showed it me, on the ramp or on the group. Very devious. Cost was 50.

    Council Workshops:

Booked it in same day and dropped it off about 3PM. He started on it right away and I walked home. Got back 40 minutes later and he'd finished. He kept it up on the air and showed me the underside of the car. He said he'd checked all of the bolts on the control arms to check they were solid and torqued up correctly. He checked the CV joint that I separated and said it was fine. He showed me the play in the rear wheels and offered to FIX THEM FOR FREE if I had the lock nut tool. I didn't. :( Cost was 40.

    Verdict? [:)}
