hi,as title my distributer I think is causing me a lot of set up issues.i will get to the point about What's happening. I set up timing...nice drive, power etc.cold start 1200rpm after running 5 mins drops to 850-900. (Perfect) Then all goes to s*^t engine races when hot randomly upto 1500 1600 rpm.sitting at the lights with This idle gets some looks. Then can suddenly goes back to idling at 1000ish(wtf). I've noticed also when it's a racing idle it also pinks(pings) under load. Dodgy dizzy??? I did think of fuelling issues but pinking randomly is odd.
Don't think from memory it's got a blue plug it's an 82 k jet cabby. Will double check vac lines. I could change dizzy for a refurbed one from crazy quiff. is there anyway of testing a dizzy to see if Something's amiss. Annoying to say the least.
can you post up the part numbers on it just to double check its correct for your engine. your symptoms dont sound right for dizzy issue though, sounds more like air leak somewhere as above
Thanks rj.think I've been here before but check anyway (dizzy is 067 905 205.) This is on the 1.8 e.v lump.used to be on my e.g 1600. I've looked for air leaks and think I may have found a couple of things The breather pipe from inlet manifold to rocker is perished (fine cracks) And the rubber bung thing that it attatches to looks cracked also. Gonna change at least these and try some new rubber hose on the small Vac pipes as they have that woven cloth type stuff over them so can't really see What's going on. If this is the issue then the "false air"must be intermittent.
ok its not correct for a 1.8 kjet, so may not be the best one to use. but again if its timed up as per 1.6 gti it doesnt sound liek the dizzy at fault rather an air leak somewhere
Ok what dizzy should I be using for a 1.8 e.v k jet.thanks. I've timed the 1.8 like the e.g was set at TDC.seems to pull well.
for the 1.8 you set it to 6 degrees BTDC while engine is idle with the vacuum line disconnected and plugged, for the 1.6 I beleive you do the same but time it to TDC? I dont have my haynes in front of me to double check and its been over 10 years sicne I last timed a 1.6 gti the above is only base spec anyway, you can usually dial more advance if its got decent fuel in. theres quite a few part numbers for the 1.8 kjet dizzy easier to try to find one then let us know part number so we can confirm what it is
Thanks, but I'm unsure on the vac line your referring to my.dizzy I'm using at Present has two vacs one to the thin hoses at front of inlet and another to the back of throttle body.am I right in thinking pull the one to the left on dizzy(throttle body one) And plug that pipe? Then set 6 btdc (diamond marker)at what rpm idle? I usually set timing at about 900 is that ok. Also from memory the more I go towards 6degrees btdc the more pinking I think I was Getting.but I could be wrong I've messed with my timing so much lately my brains fried.
Dont worry the method above I was referring to is only if you have a 1.8 dizzy, since its 1.6 with advance/retard function its not the same. from memory you just dial it to TDC but let me dig out my haynes manual tonight and look it up. with these old kjet engines though if engine is nice and healthy and you got a decent CO set you can just dial in advancea bit at a time till it starts pinking, then back it off a bit, road test with your ears open till you're happy. This should give decent performance, but to get the best out of it you need a tuning wizard such as Toyotec to have a look at it with his magic fingers
Ok I've only got a bog standard strobe to time with. But as you say I will advance till pinking and back off then. Should be about there As for the CO I've not a chance with that I would have to take it somewhere. Engine is healthy with loads of compression(new rings and honed)Don't get me wrong It's nippy but I'm sure there's more power to be found in there. I look forward to the day I only lift my bonnet to check oil and waterlol
Right just had a look, 1.6 GTi with vacuum advance & retard dizzy is set 0 degrees with both vacuum lines left on, so you have added 6 degrees extra advance. So I would say assuming everything else is tip top just back it off a little bit then road test, repeat till no pinking is heard
I've got it right now I'm sure set at TDC starts 1200rpm(cold) idles warm 850-900 No hunting. Road test as follows, basically red lined it through the gears pulls well, had 70 In third so I think I'm there now.best it's ran since install of this rebuild.i didn't feel Comfortable thrashing a new rebuild but it's done a few hundred miles and felt It was time to really test it.it seemed to like it anyway and done no harm. Maybe a little rich but I prefer it that way than being lean.thanks rj for your input.
