Hi all I am back after many years away from club gti I have bought a nearly finished project from a very nice chap yesterday After collection I drove 100 miles with a massive smile on my face until the off side drive shaft gave up. I have removed the shaft and it appears to be cut and linked with weld to the original shaft and well its just not strong enough. I am keen to get the car on the road again for more much needed smiles asap So my question is is there any solid complete shafts that will fit The Doner car was a seat leaon, It's the 6 speed box that's all I know If I need to know the code on the box where would I find it. How much are custom shafts, balancing etc these days? Not sure theres an off the shelf standard shaft for mk1? Thought short shaft was solid and long one hollow for balance to reduce torque steer due to unequal length. Possibly have an insert machined and welded to both parts of shaft to strengthen the join, or maybe sleeving it?
if its an 02M type box then both shafts need to be custom I beleive for the mk1. at least if you have both shafts you can send to supplier for custom work
