    Hi All

Been on the forum off and on for a while bout my early Mk2 GTI.

Thought I'd throw down the gauntlet.......

    Claim 1:-

My UK spec rhd Mk2 Golf GTI, built 23/3/1984, as confirmed by VW in Germany, is the oldest known surviving example....

    Claim 2:-
I am the Mk2 Golf GTI owner that has had the car since new / the longest (as of today 31 years less two months and a week).....?

    Be interested in the replies.

    Ta

I don't think that anybody is going to beat that. Is the car still used?

How did you find the exact build date? Rubjohnny looked up the build date of my "A" reg and said it was built around 8 March 1984 but I'd really like to know for sure.

My pal Duncan's car is registered 23/3/84 so surely must have been manufactured before that

Hello folks, I've seen the OP's car on the forums amongst a handful of others, love these early cars as they have a foot in the past as in the Mk1 characteristics. Yes I am said Duncan (thanks Colin). I have this early car. It's rough but still very honest for it's age, Could someone (maybe Rubjonny?) decipher the data?..

I'm not going to mess with it just give it a lot of TLC, needs welding and K-Jet pumps and pipes replaced.

    Great to see

I had a very early one, with all the Mk1 quirks etc. Sadly somebody set it on fire outside my old house. It was absolutely immaculate.[8(] Was devestating watching it burn, still upsets me now...

I can give you the build date to within a month for sure from ETKA, then by checking how many cars were built that month divide it by the number of days and give you a 'best guess' of what day it was built assuming production of cars was roughly the same for every day of the month. Also assuming they didnt stop the production line over the weekend?

for anyone wanting to post in the thread a simpler way to determine whos is oldest is simply compare vins to see whos is lowest

also you can ask VW for the birth certificate:

    Hi All

A few answers to the various posts.....

CGTI Cttee Charman No and yes ! 84 GTI still in chicken shed but taking her to a VW specialist firm soon to get her evaluated, see if they can start her, and what work req. for MOT. Tornado Red R - BRILL !!

MacColl: (Duncan) Your one registered 23/3/84 Wow, I think you might have the oldest one.
Mine was registered in UK about 3 / 4 weeks after build date, 18/4/84 so your one could be 3 / 4 weeks before 23/3/84.
rubjonny has a good way of working out approx build date but I emailed Germany and they gave me the exact build date.
I'll post the email for my contact person there so you can do the same if you wish.

afbiker02: I've already PM'd you with the German VW museum /history / records contact but I'll put it in a post for all.

T5man: no not used atm. Will do odd evaluation bits this year but hope to spend the nec. bucks on her next year........

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll compare Duncans VIN with mine and VIN decipherers should be able to spot the earlier one ?

VW Germany contact details and her reply with my confirmed build date :-

    Dear Mr S

    thank you for your eMail.

Due to the fact that the Corporate Archives have only been founded in 1997 there are large gaps
in tradition because there has been no systematical archiving until that year. Furthermore it has to
be considered that not all of the documents have been registered and made accessible yet.

After careful research of all our available records, we fortunately could locate the following
    information.

    VIN: WVWZZZ19ZEW588757

    Model: Golf GTI

    Production: 23.03.1984

    Delivery: 30.03.1984

    Delivery to: Great Britain

We are very sorry, but we could not find any information regarding the start of production
for - Golf GTI right hand drive (second generation).

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Kind regards,

    So,

    My VIN: WVWZZZ19ZEW588757

    Duncan's VIN: WVWZZZ19EW545890

Looks like Duncans got the earliest known.....?

Would be worth checking with VW Germany though.

Have you had it since new Duncan ?

Wishboneash it appeared locally to me on Gumtree just in January pretty much on my doorstep and I quickly realised I knew the seller from previously selling him parts. He didn't have it long and seemed happy enough to sell it to me because it needs welding and extensive fuel system overhaul. The minute I saw it I knew it was early for a MK2 GTI but didn't realise how early but I always wanted an early K-jet small bumper car.

I'll do some research when I get a chance, cheers

You're missing a number after the W. You should have six digits at the end not five

Wvwzzz19zfw036483 is my vin. I take it the F in place of your E's is because mine is slightly later? I think mine is September/October '84. I don't know the exact date though

Looking into it more, the F in my vin means 1985 which is strange as the date of first use is stated as 1984 on my V5 (I can't recall the month)
